INDIANAPOLIS — As it turned out, Jay County’s sectional champions were better in their non-title events.

Joseph Vormohr, who won the shot put title at the Muncie Central sectional last week, scored the lone point for the Patriot boys track team at the Indianapolis North Central regional Thursday with a personal-best toss in the discus. Mark Kelly, the sectional long jump champion, finished his senior year with a career-best effort in the long jump.

“That surprised me,” said JCHS coach Greg Garringer. “It was kind of a turn-around. Mark still had a consistent high jump, but he got a big long jump tonight. Joseph had a big night in the discus.”

Vormohr finished eighth in the discus with a toss of 150 feet, two inches. That scored one point, which placed Jay County in a three-way tie for 23rd with Indianapolis Broad Ripple and Decatur Central with 24 teams participating.

Lawrence Central won the regional title with 103 points, and Ben Davis was second with 96.

The discus was the high point of the night for Vormohr, who had hoped to challenge for the top three in the shot put and a berth in the state meet. But, he stepped out of the ring to foul on two of his three preliminary attempts, and his one good toss went just 41 feet, 10 inches.

That was nearly 10 feet shorter than his winning sectional throw, and was not good enough to put him in the top nine to reach the finals.

Kelly had hoped to clear the state standard — six feet, 41/2 inches — to earn a state berth in that event. He cleared easily through six feet, 11/2 inches, which bettered his sectional championship mark by 11/2 inches, but missed on each of his three attempts at six feet, 31/2 inches to place ninth.

Each of the top eight jumpers reached the state standard and will compete next week in Indianapolis.

Kelly had a career day in the long jump as each of his six attempts were better than the jump of 19 feet, one-half inch which placed him third in sectional competition. His top leap was 20 feet, one-half inch, which placed him ninth ahead of sectional champion and runner-up Jay Isom and J.P. Shopher of Muncie Southside.

Jay County was also involved in three running events, with senior Adam May placing 12th in the 400-meter dash in 52.24 seconds.

May was also on both relay teams, joining Alex Michael, Ben Wellman and Justin Gilbert for 12th in the 4x100 in 45.85 and teaming with Micah Enyart, Doug Murray and Clint Muhlenkamp for 14th in the 4x400 relay in 3-minutes, 44.99 seconds.

“Overall the kids were running personal bests,” said Garringer. “Kelly went 20-feet plus in the long jump for the first time. He’s been consistently six-plus in the high jump. Joseph equaled a personal-best (in the discus).

“I’m pretty happy with the effort. We’ve just got to build on it.”[[In-content Ad]]
