Season ends for JC's Bash, Spahr (02/16/04)

The wrestling season ended for Jay County Saturday at the New Haven semistate meet at Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne.

Both Bill Spahr (152) and Tyler Bash (HVY) were eliminated in the first round.

Tyler Bash, whose final mark was 33-9, was pinned by Spencer Fulk of Fort Wayne Carroll. Spahr, who finished at 26-13, dropped a 14-5 major decision to Josh Miller of Northwestern.

Bash was a sectional runner-up and finished third in the regional to reach the semistate round. Spahr placed third in the sectional and regional tournaments.

Winter swimmers 3rd

The Jay County Winter Swim Team finished third in the Mid-State Winter Conference Championships with 306 points. Richmond took first place with 423 points, and Connersville was second with 325.

Cori Vormohr had a perfect day, leading a group of four swimmers who took victories for Jay County.

Vormohr was first in each of her five events in the girls 13-14-year-old division. She won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle, the 100-yard breaststroke, the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard individual medley.

Justin Klopp just missed perfection, finishing first in four events and second in the other. His victories came in the 13-14-year-old boys 50- and 100-yard freestyle, the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard individual medley.

Sam Miller picked up a pair of victories division, and Alex Habegger added one. Miller was first in the 50-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard individual medley, and Habegger won the 100-yard breaststroke.

Jesse Sutton, Levi Hummel, Daniel Velasco and Sok Vormohr teamed to win the 8-and-younger 100-yard medley relay, and Willie Skiver, Sutton, Velasco and Vormohr made up the winning 8-and-under freestyle team.

EJ undefeated

East Jay’s wrestling team continued its perfect start to the year last week, moving to 8-0 with a 78-9 trouncing of Blackford.

Picking up wins for the Chiefs were Cameron Pfeifer (80), Josh Lochtefeld (85), Casey Kenney (90), Mason Murphy (95), Ben Theurer (100), James Abbott (105) and Aaron Miller (110). Also earning victories were David Jones (115), Cody Sutton (120), Jacob Schultz (125), Aaron Brenner (135), Brad Tipton (152), Kaleb Hemmelgarn (160) and Drake Gentle (225).[[In-content Ad]]
