Sectional draw goes well for JC (10/08/03)
Sectional Football
Someone at the IHSAA offices must like Jay County. The Patriot football team couldn’t have asked for a much better tournament draw than it got Tuesday night.
Sure, winless New Castle is on the opposite side of the bracket. But more importantly, so are Class 4A No. 1 Delta and No. 5 Muncie Central.
And, 1-6 Jay County drew a first-round match-up at home against the only team it has beaten all year, the Connersville Spartans (1-6). The Patriots scored their only win of the season thus far on Sept. 26 by a score of 33-7.
The Patriot/Spartan tilt and all first-round games will be played Friday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. The last time the two teams met in sectional action was 1999, when Connersville pulled off a stunning upset on the road 26-0.
The other first-round game on the Patriots’ side of the bracket shows Muncie Southside (2-5) at Greenfield (2-5).
A first-round victory could leave Jay County to play at Muncie Southside in the second round, a team it lost to 21-12 this season. The Patriots would also play at Greenfield, a team they do not meet in regular-season action.
Muncie Southside would host a second-round game versus Connersville, having lost to the Spartans 14-13 during the season.
The Jay/Connersville and Southside/Greenfield winners will meet in a Halloween showdown for a right to go to the sectional title game.
On the other side of the bracket, the fifth-ranked Bearcats (6-1) will be a huge favorite when they visit New Castle (0-7) in the first round. Muncie Central won the regular-season game 45-21.
The top-rated Eagles (7-0) were also selected for a road contest in the first round against Pendleton Heights. They will also be heavily favored, having already defeated the Arabians this year 18-0.
The likely second-round game would be Delta at Muncie Central in a rematch of last-year’s first-round sectional contest. The Bearcats topped the Eagles last season 9-7.
In regular-season games between teams which could meet in the sectional championship game: Delta defeated Jay County 42-0, Greenfield 41-7, and Muncie Southside 49-27; Muncie Central defeated Muncie Southside 34-9; and Pendleton Heights beat Greenfield 20-19 in double-overtime.
South Adams
The Starfires (1-6) will open sectional play with a visit to Oak Hill (4-3) in Class 2A’s Sectional 28.
The other game on South Adams’ half of the bracket matches Alexandria (2-5) against Centerville (3-4).
No. 10 Madison Grant will host Bluffton on the other side of the bracket, and Eastbrook (6-1) will play at Winchester (4-3).
The lone win of the season for the Starfires came over Winchester by a score of 12-0. They lost to Bluffton 24-14 in their only other regular-season game against a possible sectional opponent.[[In-content Ad]]
