Seminar series set to begin Oct. 4
Business Roundup
Dreamhaven’s free seminar series for entrepreneurs and those interested in starting a new venture will begin Oct. 4 during a session titled “Identifying Your Strength.”
The session, which runs from 6:30 to 9 p.m., is part of a local effort aimed at empowering entrepreneurs toward successfully starting their own businesses.
It is the first in a five-week program, with seminars each Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. Titles after week one are “Assess the Market Opportunity,” “Convince Yourself, Customers and (maybe) Investors,” “Develop Your Presentation,” and “Reality Check.”
Dreamhaven will hold a business presentation competition in January.

Marsh donates
The parent company of Main Street Market is donating nearly $50,000 to police.
Each Marsh Supermarkets, Inc. location will donate $500, with money going to police stations in the Indianapolis area based on how many Marsh stores are in a given station’s community.
The donation is in conjunction with the Marsh Great American Cookout Super Block Party, an Aug. 2 event held to show gratitude to law enforcement agencies.
Complex approved
The Berne City Council Monday approved the building of a new complex with room for a restaurant and banquet hall.
The banquet hall could potentially hold approximately 350 people.
It will be located in the plaza east of U.S. 27, on the north end of Berne.
POET VP to speak
POET Vice President of Corporate Affairs Doug Berven will speak Wednesday in Washington D.C.
Berven will discuss changes and advancements in the ethanol industry during session titled “Conventional Biofuels – Where do we go fro here?” The session is a part of the 3rd annual Renewable Energy Technology Conference & Exhibition.
Presidents of ICM, DAK Renewable Energy and KATZEN International, Inc. are also scheduled to speak.
MyFarms gets award
MyFarms.org, a website created by Fennig Farms of Jay County, recently won an Indiana Innovation Award.
The social networking site analyzes field data produced by satellite farming and brings farmers and advisers closer.
Kaup founder nominated
The founder of Kaup Pharmacy, of Fort Recovery, Ohio, was nominated for the 2011 Next-Generation Pharmacist Industry Advocate of the Year Award
Jerry Kaup, who founded Kaup Pharmacy in 1980 with his wife Lorri, was nominated for his “singular focus on advancing his profession through the full service offerings of Kaup Pharmacy,” according to a news release.
Winners and nominees were recognized in August at the Next-Generation Pharmacist Awards in Boston, Mass.
ATI dividend
Allegheny Technologies Incorporated announced a quarterly cash dividend of $.18 per share.
The specialty metals producer said in a recent news release the dividend is payable on Sept. 28 to stockholders of record at the close of business on Sept. 20.
Headed to court
Contract negotiations between Walgreens Co. and Express Scripts Inc. are headed to the courtroom after Express Scripts filed a complaint in a U.S. District Court.
The two companies have been battling over extending a contract set to expire at the end of the year. Both sides have claimed the other is making unreasonable demands.
Conscious of female ownership
Walmart announced they will double the amount of money spent purchasing from women-owned business.
The decision is part of a public relations campaign in response to claims the company promoted women less than men.
Walmart will also fund more than $100 million in grants to train female workers around the globe.
Crop insurance closing date
The closing date for crop insurance is Sept. 30 for certain crops planted this fall.
Indiana winter wheat, winter barley and mint fall into this category, according to a news release from the USDA Risk Management Agency.
Ivy Tech expansion
Ivy Tech Community College is accepting bids to demolish half a block of downtown Muncie storefronts in preparation for further expansion.
The stores are located in the 200 block of West Main Street.
The college has already expanded into the Fisher Building downtown. Classes are currently held on the third floor of Fisher, with renovations on the second floor set to begin this fall.
In all, 1,692 of the college’s 4,772 Muncie-region students are taking classes located downtown.
Controlling stake
Simon Property Group, of Indianapolis, has increased its stake of King of Prussia Mall from 12 percent to 96 percent.
The Philadelphia-area mall, valued at $1.25 billion, was put up for sale earlier this year by Australia’s Lend Lease.
Nuclear medicine
The radiology department of Adams’s Memorial Hospital obtained a accreditation in nuclear medicine from the College of Radiology.
Nuclear medicine, a branch of medical imaging, diagnoses and treats a variety of diseases by administering a small amount of radioactive material to patients.
This is the first time the hospital has received accreditation in this area.
Medical center recognized
Bluffton Regional Medical Center was named a top performer on “key quality measures.”
The hospital was one of six Indiana hospitals recognized by The Joint Commission.
The commission bases their choices on data about “evidence-based clinical processes that are shown to improve care for certain conditions.”[[In-content Ad]]
