September is national library card month (9/8/05)

The Jay County Public Library will offer special incentives for all library card holders during the month of September in celebration of National Library Card Sign Up month. Library bucks will be handed out each Wednesday, there will be weekly drawings for adults, teens and kids and a monthly drawing for all new card applicants.

Also the Survivor Reading Program begins on Monday, Sept. 12, for teens and adults. Participants can win weekly prizes and for every three books read, they will get to vote off a library member. Staff members are creating doll-sized alter egos to take on the role of “Library Survivor.” Watch the display at the library to see who the ultimate “library survivor” will be. Registration begins Sept. 12 and continues through Sept. 24. For more information, call Miranda Hummel at (260) 726-7890.

Registration forms are available until Saturday for the September Reading Program for children “Share the Treasure with Captain Book.” An activity calendar will be given upon registration and for each five activities given, children will receive a prize. Prizes will also be awarded for reading 10 books during the month.

A Pirate Ball for all ages will be Tuesday, Sept. 13, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 17, will be a Pirate Craft Special from noon until 4 p.m. for preschool and elementary age children. Friday, Sept. 23, a Pirate After School Special will be held from 2:45 to 4 p.m. Registration is required for the after school special. To make reservations, call the library at (260) 726-7890.

September Story Times will be on Mondays at 10 a.m. and Tuesdays at 1 p.m. from Sept. 12 through Sept. 27. Also a Family Night Story Time will be each Wednesday at 7 p.m. Children of all ages are welcome and little ones may come in their pajamas. A Baby and Toddler Activity Time will be held on Thursday, Sept. 22, at 9:30 a.m. for children three and younger. Older siblings are welcome.

Bob Jackson, Portland, was recently inducted into The Portland Evening Optimist Club by the Indiana North District Governor Don Covalt. His mother Marilyn Jackson presented him with his Optimist pin.

Grief classes

State of the Heart Home Health and Hospice will begin a six week Fall Grief Education Class beginning Wednesday, Sept. 14. The meetings will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Jay County Hospital conference room C.

The support group is free and for adults who are mourning the death of a loved one, recent or in the past. Participants are encouraged to share as they feel comfortable.
