Services set for Freeman, scout leader, funeral director (9/29/03)
Services for Myron G. Freeman, 94, a longtime funeral director and organizer of the first Boy Scout troop in Jay County, will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Baird-Freeman Funeral Home with Pastor Paul Strouse officiating. Entombment will follow in Elm Ridge Mausoleum, Muncie.
Freeman, a former resident of 303 E. Race St., Portland, died Friday afternoon in AmeriCare Living Center, Portland.
Visitation is Tuesday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home with Masonic services at 7:30 p.m. Members of the Jay Lodge No. 87 are to meet at 7 p.m. for services.
Born on April 27, 1909 in Jay County to Fred and Goldia (May) Freeman, he was a graduate of Portland High School and Indianapolis College of Mortuary Science. In 1935, he married Margaret Ramsey, who died in 1995. He was a funeral director for 53 years and the former owner of Baird-Freeman Funeral Home, Portland. He was a member of West Walnut Street Church of Christ, where he was Bible school superintendent for 12 years.
In 1929 he organized the first Boy Scout troop in Jay County. He was a former Jay County Boys Scouts chairman of Court of Honor, and earned the Eagle Scout Award in two years. In 1979 he enacted the Myron Freeman Endowment for Jay County Boy Scouts through The Portland Foundation.
He was active in the Chamber of Commerce, Juffy, Portland Country Club, and Portland Kiwanis Club for over 70 years where he had 46 years of perfect attendance and was past Lt. Governor of Kiwanis International. He was also a member of the Portland school board member for eight years; and Jay Lodge No. 87 F.&A.M., where he was past master.
Honored by the Cincinnatus League with a Lifetime Achievement Award, he was also a member of the Scottish Rite, Mizpah Shrine, York Rite, Portland Elks Lodge, Eagles Lodge and for 70 years, a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge.
Surviving are one daughter, Myra Jane Smith, Hartford City; a brother, Robert Freeman, Florida; his companion, Maggie Runkle, Portland; and three grandchildren.
