Services to be dropped (03/29/08)
Business roundup
State of the Heart Home Health and Hospice will no longer offer home health care.
"Due to the Jan. 1, 2008, drastic changes in the Medicare Payment system for home health services, it was decided that it is in the best interests of State of the Heart to discontinue the home health program," Tammy Fox, executive director of the non-profit said in a recent press release.
The program will now be known as State of the Heart Hospice. The agency plans to now focus on building and strengthening the hospice program and educating the public on the value of hospice care.
Lights out
Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of Indiana will participate in the World Wildlife Fund's Earth Hour on Saturday.
From 8 to 9 p.m., the company, which has a bottling facility in Portland, will cut off all non-essential lights in its sales and production facilities, including outdoor signs.
The step is an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Last year's event had 2.2 million participants.
Free screenings
A local eye center will be offering free glaucoma and cataract screenings in April.
The Portland Eye Center, 1111 N. Meridian St., Portland, will conduct the screenings on April 23, from 2 to 4 p.m.
No appointment is necessary.

Involved in suit
Sarah Orr, a former Jay County resident, was a key plaintiff in lawsuit against coffee chain Starbucks in which the company was ordered to pay more than $100 million to current and former employees of its stores in California.
Orr, a 1988 graduate of Heritage Hall High School in Muncie, also attended Jay County High School. She lives in North Hollywood, Calif.
The suit, filed by a Starbucks employee, charged that money from tip jars was shared with shift supervisors, in violation of state law that prohibits managers and supervisors from sharing in tips.
Although the suit was filed in 2004 by a single employee, it was eventually granted class action status.
Starbucks employees could receive from $1,000 to $10,000 each in the settlement.
Orr, 36, is a schoolteacher in Burbank.
She was one of five former employees to give a deposition in the suit, and also served as a spokesperson for employees in talking with media outlets during and after the decision was handed down. More than 100,000 current and former Starbucks employees could receive a portion of the $100 million awarded.
Orr is the daughter of Dan Orr, a rural Redkey resident and teacher at Jay County High School.
Completes training
A rural Portland woman has completed training and is now a certified Educational Consultant for Educational Development Corporation.
Keri S. Harker, 4140 East 700 South, will be servicing several schools and libraries for the Tulsa, Okla.-based company. EDC is the publisher of award-winning children's books, with titles in science, history, nature and foreign language.
As an independent consultant with Usborne Books, she will now offer home shows, book fairs and fundraisers.
Workshop planned
SCORE will hold a workshop Thursday at the Anderson Public Library.
"Identifying Your Start-up Funding" will be held in the Delaware Room of the library, which is located at 111 E. 12th St. The session will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Among the topics that will be discussed are finances for start-up businesses and how business loss can affect credit.
