She celebrates birth of healthy grandson

As I See It

By By Diana Dolecki, Special to The Commercial Review-

The population of the world is approximately 6,916,690,600 according to the United States Census Bureau. The United States population is about 311,300,200. Those numbers increased by one when my newest grandson, Nicholas, entered the world last Thursday evening.
He is a healthy eight pounds and mother and baby are doing well. Five-year-old sister Emma was excited to see her new brother. Two-year-old brother Jacob was less enthusiastic. He wasn’t quite sure what to make of the infant. I’m sure he will come around when Nicky is old enough to become a playmate.
A baby is born every few seconds and each and every time it is a miracle. A new life holds endless possibilities. Will this child grow up? Will he be happy and healthy? Will he save the world or destroy it? Anything and everything is possible.
There will definitely be a brief increase in the purchase of tiny clothes and baby supplies. This child has lots of people who want to spoil him.
We will have to remember that his siblings need attention also. After all, Jacob has been the darling of the family his whole life and now he has been replaced by the baby. I’m sure that will take some getting used to.
We will not get to hold the new addition to the family for awhile. We will let the commotion die down before our first visit. I’m sure Nicky will have plenty of people who will do their best to spoil him in the meantime.
We are so fortunate to live in a time when babies are born in hospitals. My daughter is lucky that she lives in a world where most women and babies survive childbirth. It is something we take for granted but it wasn’t always the case.
As recently as 90 years ago nearly one out of 100 women died during or as a result of childbirth. In 2004, the most recent year I found statistics for, it had dropped to 13 deaths per 100,000. That’s quite a difference. I don’t think we realize how lucky we are until we compare our lives to those of our grandmothers and great-grandmothers.
My grandmother was born in a log cabin and no, she was not related to Abraham Lincoln. My mother, daughter, grandchildren and I were all born in hospitals. I have to believe that hospitals are safer. They are better prepared for anything that can go wrong.
As far as I know, nothing went wrong during Nicky’s birth. He took his own sweet time coming out. His fingers and toes were counted. His first pictures show a perfect little boy. Mother is happy and healthy and is looking forward to a good night’s sleep - which I don’t expect her to get for at least a couple of weeks.
There is a new baby in our family. He is perfect in every way, as are his siblings. He is one more person to love. He is one more person to cherish. Now we need to convince Jacob that this is a good thing.[[In-content Ad]]
