Sheep show set for fair (07/11/2008)
Taking Note
The sheep show was recently held at the Pennville Fair with 62 sheep shown from six different counties.
Winning grand champion market lamb was Katie Snyder from Jay County and reserve grand champion market lamb was won by Jenna Jutte of Mercer County, Ohio.
Chelsea Klenke from Mercer County, Ohio, won grand champion ewe and grand champion ram and reserve grand champion ewe was won by Allie Campbell of Jay County.
Davis Will from Mercer County, Ohio, won beginner showmanship; Kyle Garringer from Jay County won junior showmanship and Travis Homan from Jay County won senior showmanship.
Redkey man chosen
Steve Fennig, Redkey, a member of Portland Elks Lodge No. 768, has been chosen as the new deputy of the East District of the Indiana Elks Association.
Fennig will be responsible for working with local Elks Lodges to fulfill the Order's longstanding commitment to promote charity and patriotism in their communities.
Library news
Reading logs for the Summer Reading Program at Jay County Public Library need to turned in by Saturday at 5 p.m.
Children and teens who reached their goals are invited to a pool party on Saturday, July 19, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Portland Pool. Refreshments will be served and awards will be given. Adults may also swim.
Those not attending the pool party may pick up their prize bags beginning Monday, July 21, at the library.

Bluegrass Jam
Three Bluegrass Jams will be held at the Limberlost State Historic Site in Geneva. The shows will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 20, Aug. 17 and Sept. 21.
Musicians are welcome to perform solo or jam with others.
Bring lawn chairs. For more information, call Randy Lehman at (260) 368-7428.
Contests in Union City
As part of State Line Heritage Days in Union City, a Most Photogenic Baby contest and a Pampered Pet contest will be held.
Babies must have been born before July 29, 2005 to be eligible. To enter, send a 4 X 6 photo with the baby's name, address, age, birth date, parents' names and phone number printed on the back.
Send or drop photos off at The Corner Cupboard, 239 N. Columbia St., Union City, IN, by Tuesday, July 29. Store hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Entries will be displayed at The Corner Cupboard at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, July 30, to be voted on and voting will continue through Saturday, Aug. 2, at 1 p.m. Voting will be done by the public by placing a dollar in the jar or jars of their choice.
Pictures may be picked up after Monday, Aug. 4, and throughout the month. For more information, call (765) 964-6080.
To enter the Pampered Pet contest, send a 4 X 6 photo with pet's name, type or breed, age, entrants name, address and phone number on the back. Also on one side of an index card explain how your pet is pampered.
The same entry rules as the baby contest will apply.
Arts in the Parks
Students are needed to participate in Arts in the Parks classes this month in Berne and Geneva.
Classes will take place at Lehman Park Pavillion in Berne and the Geneva Public Library.

Graduates
Stephanie Rines, Portland, graduated from Wittenberg University in May with a major in English and a minor in management.
She also completed leadership training exercises with Leadership Clark County, participated in the Wittenberg Rotoract Chapter and traveled to Mississippi to help with Hurricane Katrina relief.
Rines plans to spend a year as an AmeriCorps volunteer before beginning a career in the non-profit sector.

Julie Sours, Portland, made the dean's list at Indiana University College of Arts and Sciences for the spring semester.
