Shepherd, Cannonballs can't break Rockets (07/16/04)

Local Roundup

Even a former major leaguer couldn’t stop the Portland Rockets Thursday.

Portland won both halves of a double-header against Wabash Cannonball, topping former major league pitcher Keith Shepherd in the first game 3-2. It won the second 8-3 thanks to excellent pitching from a pair of Jay County graduates.

Shepherd, who pitched in 41 major league games for Philadelphia, Colorado, Boston and Baltimore, looked good as he shut out the Rockets on two hits through the first four innings.

But they would come alive in the fifth and sixth, scoring three times in the two innings. One of those runs came on a double by Brandon Cooley followed by an RBI single from Kris Steffen.

Neil Schmitz earned the win by allowing two runs on two hits in five innings. Jay County graduate Pete Byrum struck out the final two batters with the bases loaded to earn the save.

Former Patriots Mitch Waters and Josh Jellison took care of the mound duties in the second game, with Waters starting and allowing just one unearned run in four innings. Jellison followed by striking out four batters in a pair of scoreless innings, and Phil Bruns tossed the final frame.

Cooley, Bruns and Pete Milas each had two hits in the game-two win. Tommy Pearce went deep for a home run.
