POET fines
The POET Biorefining ethanol plant in Alexandria has agreed to pay a civil penalty of $28,000 after the Indiana Department of Environmental Management alleged the plant had quality issues.
The agency said the POET ethanol plant operated its fermentation and distillation processes without a pollution control device on three occasions in 2010 and 2011.
The violations were related to the section of POET’s operating permit regulating the control of volatile organic compounds and hazardous air pollutants.
POET’s alleged failure to submit quarterly “deviation and compliance monitoring” reports in the third quarter of 2010 and the first quarter of 2011 is covered in the civil penalty.
The company agreed to pay $5,640 to the state’s environmental management special fund. POET agreed to make a cash payment of $22,560 to the Indiana Finance Authority to fund activities at a brownfield site in Alexandria instead of paying the remaining civil penalty.
POET also operates a plant in Portland.
