Simon leads SAHS

BERNE — After an 0-5 start, the Starfires have won two of their last three games.
The South Adams High School girls soccer team picked up its second victory of the year Tuesday, knocking off the visiting New Haven Bulldogs 3-2.
The game was scoreless at halftime before Rachel Simon led the Starfires to the win in the second half. She converted both of her shots on goal off of assists from junior Michaela Rupp.
Riley Liechty, a freshman, scored the other goal for SAHS after taking an assist from Simon. Sharon Balsiger and Simon each took two shots in the game, and Olivia Turner, Liechty and Rupp added one apiece.
Sophomore goalie Alaina Johnston made 14 assists for the Starfires, whose other victory came by a 6-0 score over Muncie Southside.

Cross country cruises
The South Adams cross country teams cruised in their first home dual meets of the season Tuesday with the boys topping the Woodlan Warriors 15-50 and the girls posting an 18-43 victory.
Brody Shane paced the Starfire boys, who were coming off of a third-place finish at Saturday’s Treaty City Invitational in Greenville, as he won the race in 17 minutes, 59 seconds. Joel Hawbaker was second in 18:21 followed by Simon Sprunger (third – 18:35), Sawyer Miller (fourth – 18:47) and Daniel Velsaco (fifth – 18:51).
Kristen Muselman won the girls race for SAHS in 22:30.
Aleesha Goodwin was second in 23:05 with Kaitlin Hawbaker fourth in 23:19 and Lauren Klaehn fifth in 23:33.

Netters fall to Jets
South Adams’ boys tennis team won just four games Tuesday in a 5-0 loss to the visiting Adams Central Flying Jets.
The Starfires’ No. 2 doubles duo of Landon Lehman and Dylan Pierce won three of those games in a 6-0, 6-3 loss to Ben Kaehr and Luke Marbach. Cole Myers earned the other in a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Eric Ripley at No. 3 singles.
Brayden Myers (No. 1 singles), Blake Baumer (No. 2 singles) and Jared Rife and Dexter Miller (No. 1 doubles) all suffered shutout losses.
Cody Simindinger earned the lone junior varsity victory 6-4 over Tanner Roth at No. 4 singles as the Starfires dropped the match 4-1.
South Adams’ varsity squad also fell 5-0 to Leo on Saturday.

SW tops volleyball
The Starfires dropped their eighth straight match Tuesday, falling 25-16, 25-19, 25-21 to the visiting Southern Wells Raiders.
South Adams, which picked up its only win Aug. 18 over Western, got nine kills, five digs and two blocks from junior Alyssa Bluhm. Cady Farlow added five kills, three digs and two blocks, and Hannah Mitchel had three digs and two blocks.
Lauren Smith put up three assists, and Hannah Taing had three aces.
The Starfires dropped the junior varsity match 25-18, 25-19.

Teeter leads 8th
Marc Teeter had a hand in three of the Starfires’ four touchdowns Tuesday as the South Adams Middle School eighth grade football team picked up a 30-13 home win over the Bluffton Tigers. The seventh grade team lost 19-6.
Teeter completed all of his four pass attempts for 107 yards, including TD throws of 57 yards to Jared Grabau and 5 yards to Brian O’Donnell in the second quarter. He also ran for a 1-yard TD. J.D. Groh had a 33-yard scoring run, and James Groh made nine tackles.
Joe Stuber scored the lone TD for the seventh graders on a 3-yard run and finished with 75 rushing yards. He also made 16 tackles, and Isaiah Baumgartner added 12 tackles.
