Simon scores four to lead SA

BERNE — In their last six games, the Starfires had scored nine goals. They surpassed that total Tuesday.
Rachel Simon scored four times to lead the South Adams High School girls soccer team to a 10-2 victory over the visiting Mississinewa Indians.
Simon scored twice in each half for the Starfires (5-8), who picked up their first back-to-back wins of the year. SAHS also defeated Lakewood Park Christian 2-0 on Saturday.
Three of Simon’s goals were unassisted, and she also scored off of an assist from Jasmin Thuerich. Simon also assisted on goals by Morgan Haines and Olivia Turner.
Samantha Sprunger scored twice, and Riley Liechty had a pair of assists. Adding single goals were Sylvia Marbach and Thuerich. Haines also had an assist.
Alaina Johnston made three saves for the Starfires, who were up 5-0 at halftime.

Runners dominate
BERNE — The South Adams boys cross country team swept the top five places in Tuesday’s race at home for a 15-50 victory over the Heritage Patriots. The Bluffton Tigers did not have enough runners for a team score.
SAHS also won both girls competitions, 19-42 over Bluffton and 17-45 over Heritage.
Brody Shane paced the Starfires, winning the boys race in 17 minutes, 15 seconds. Simon Sprunger was second in 17:41 followed by Joel Hawbaker (18:01), Andrew Steffen (18:08) and Sawyer Miller (18:24).
Kristen Muselman won the girls race for South Adams with a time of 21:27. Aleesha Goodwin was the runner-up in 22:11, and Lauren Klaehn finished third in 22:20.

Boys soccer loses
GAS CITY — The shorthanded Starfires couldn’t keep up with the host Mississinewa Indians Tuesday in a 6-2 defeat.

Mississinewa scored four times in the first half against South Adams (2-9-1), which had just 12 players available because of injuries.
Dustin Dellinger scored both of the South Adams goals, including one on assists from Lathan Luginbill and Chance Sprunger in the first half. His second-half goal was unassisted.
Tyler Sprunger, a freshman stepping in at goalie for the injured L.J. Moser, finished with 21 saves.

Volleyball swept
GARRETT — South Adams was unable to slow down the Garrett Railroaders Tuesday as they lost 25-12, 25-15, 25-18.
Freshman setter Taylor Smith paced Garrett with 23 assists, 15 digs, 15 service points, four aces and two blocks. Alaina Creager had 26 digs, and Rachel Stafford totaled 12 kills.
The Starfires won the junior varsity match, 25-19, 25-20.

MS football falls
LEO — The South Adams Middle School football teams struggled Tuesday as the seventh graders lost 29-7 to the Leo Lions while the eighth grade squad fell 26-0.
Joe Stuber had the lone touchdown of the evening for the Starfires, scoring on a 6-yard run with 43 seconds left in the seventh grade game. He also kicked the extra point, finished with 15 carries for 132 yards and made 15 tackles.
The eighth graders played just one half of football because of injuries and illnesses. Chris Beitler led SAMS with seven tackles.
