Sixth inning destroys Starfires (05/13/05)

WOODBURN — When the Warriors finally decided to start swinging the bats they didn’t fool around. Woodlan went scoreless for the first five innings Thursday before posting a nine-run sixth in a 9-3 victory over the South Adams baseball team.

Justin Caffee took the loss for the Starfires, giving up six runs — five earned — after tossing five scoreless innings. He allowed seven hits and a walk while striking out eight.

Lukas Baumgartner hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning, which gave South Adams a 3-0 lead before Woodlan went wild in the bottom of the frame.

Kyle Alberson and Caffee each doubled in the game, and Brent Habegger and Jordan Sharp scored the Starfires’ other two runs.

Tigers clobber Fort JV

FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery junior varsity softball team gave up at least three runs in every inning in a 23-5 loss to the Versailles Tigers Thursday.

Versailles was relentless, scoring four times in the first inning, three in the second, five in the third, six in the fourth and five in the fifth. Carla Guggenbiller took the loss as she started and survived 21/3 innings.

Val Forkamp had two hits, a run, an RBI and a stolen base for the Indians. Ashley Grube had a double and an RBI, Sara Fortkamp singled, stole a base and scored once and Lori Osterholt had a run and a stolen base.

Ja-Mar scores shutout

PORTLAND — Brock McFarland and Alex Dunn combined on a one-hit shutout to give Ja-Mar T.V. and Appliance a 9-0 victory over Pak-a-Sak in their Portland Junior League Willie Mays League game Thursday.

McFarland started the game and struck out nine of the 10 batters he faced. Dunn finished with six strikeouts.

Corey Bellis went 2-for-3 with a triple and scored two runs, one of which came in the seven-run fourth inning. McFarland finished 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, a run and two RBIs.

Brandon Ferner had the lone Pak-a-Sak hit, a single in the fourth inning.

In Thursday’s other Willie Mays game MainSource Bank got two runs apiece from Kegan Comer, Christian Stephen and Cade Price to top Inman-U-Loc 11-5.

Comer had an inside-the-park home run, a double and two RBIs. Stephen added a hit and two RBIs, and Price also had a single.

Derrick Jordan had two hits, including a double, and two runs for Inman, and Brandon Green also scored twice.[[In-content Ad]]
