MIDDLETOWN — Erin St. Myers wouldn’t let her hot streak die, winning a three-set match Tuesday to lift the Jay County girls tennis team to a 3-2 victory over the Shenandoah Raiders. The win ended a four-match losing streak.
St. Myers helped end a four-match losing streak for the Patriots after dropping her first set at No. 2 singles against Kayla Bell 6-4. She won the second set, and the third went all the way to 6-6 to force a tiebreaker.
The extra session wasn’t even close as St. Myers won 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) to give Jay County the win with a singles sweep. She has won 11 of her last 12 matches.
Whitney Schemenaur and Julie Sours won close first sets and then dominated the second at the other two singles spots. Schemenaur defeated Whitney Baker 6-4, 6-1, and Sours topped Kelly Ray by the same score.
The doubles matches each went three sets, but the Patriots (5-7) dropped both. Brianne Morrical and Chelsea Reff fell 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) in a heart-breaker at No. 1 doubles, and Stephanie Homan and Carissa Wilkins lost 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.
Jay County also won the junior varsity match 3-2 with a singles sweep.
Angie Stults led the effort at No. 1 singles with an 8-2 victory over Jessica Parrish. Tiffani Bickel topped Kelsey Meyers 8-3 at No. 2 singles and No. 3 singles player Megan Adams knocked off Elizabeth Sturger 8-5.
Both Patriot doubles teams were shut out. Megan Knittle and Jessica Muhlenkamp lost 8-0 to Lindsey Rize and Ellian Lurd, and Betsy Knittle and Cindy Muhlenkamp lost by the same score to the same duo.
Softball close vs. Bruins
PORTLAND — The eighth-ranked team in the state didn’t intimidate the Patriots.
Jay County held strong against the Class 3A No. 8 Blackford Bruins Tuesday in a 5-3 defeat. Blackford improved to 14-3 with the win.
The Patriots (7-11) held a brief lead, scoring one run in the first inning. But, the Bruins took the lead for good with two runs in the second and third innings.
Brittany Logue suffered the loss, allowing five runs on six hits in seven innings. She walked three batters.
Trisha Champ had three hits, including a triple, and a stolen base. Amber Champ added two hits and two runs.[[In-content Ad]]
