Smith expansion planned (12/10/05)

Buisness news

Smith Brothers of Berne Inc. has announced plans to expand its production of furniture.

Plans call for either building a new mill room or purchasing the former Berne Tube building site to accommodate what a company spokesman termed “significant sales growth.”

To facilitate the company’s needs, Berne City Council on Monday agreed in principal to extend tax abatements to the company at a later date.

Dave Burnson, Smith Brothers representative, told the Berne City Council this week, the company has entered into talks in an attempt to acquire the former Berne Tube building. Should those talks fall through, Burnson said, the company is prepared to build a new 40,000 square foot mill room on property owned by the company near the intersection of Parr Road and Adams County Road 000.

Wal-Mart building sold

The former Wal-Mart building in Winchester has been sold to a Shelbyville, Ky., developer.

Doug Thurman said this week he had purchased the building and land for $625,000.

Thurman told the Winchester News Gazette this week he purchased several other vacated Wal-Mart buildings at about the same time.

“I purchase them each separately,” he was quoted as saying. “I fix them up and look for tenants. Sometimes tenants would rather me be involved than Wal-Mart. Sometimes they would rather deal with Wal-Mart.”

He said he would be interested in hearing from the Randolph County Board of Commissioners to see if they are still interested in using the building as a temporary home for the county courts and offices.

To contact Thurman about the possibility of leasing the building, call (502) 387-5003.

Announces loss

Marsh Supermarkets, Inc. has reported a net loss of $3.4 million compared to net income of $1.3 million for the same period last year.

The company attributed the losses to lower contributions from comparable stores, startup and operating losses of new stores, and higher general and administrative expenses.

Total revenues for the quarter increased to $549.6 million from $524.9 million for the prior year quarter. Sales in comparable supermarkets and convenience stores increased 3.6 percent in the second quarter of 2006 from the same period in 2005, but comparable store merchandise sales, which exclude gasoline sales, declined 0.7 percent.

The company also announced that is had retained Merrill Lynch & Co. to explore strategic alternatives for the enhancement of shareholder value, including a possible sale of the company.

The company also announced that the board of directors had determined to suspend the payment of future cash quarterly dividends on company common stock until the company improves its financial performance and its credit ratios on a sustainable basis.

“We are clearly disappointed with the loss reported for the quarter,” stated Don E. Marsh, chairman and CEO. “The positive developments of recording our sixth consecutive quarter of increases in sales from comparable stores and the new credit facility were outweighed by a number of negative factors.”

Economy to grow

The national economy will continue to grow next year, but at a slower rate than 2005 with mild increases in inflation and interest rates, according to two Ball State University economists.

During the 10th annual Indiana Economic Outlook luncheon Dec. 6, Ball State’s Patrick Barkey and Gary Santoni admitted their optimism was based on economic momentum created by 2005.

“Since the low point of mid-2003, manufacturing employment statewide has stabilized and even managed to grow a bit,” Barkey said. “Businesses today have plenty of cash, and their brisk spending on capital goods and equipment have kept plenty of Indiana businesses’ order books full.”

Mechanic honored

James Sheron of Huggins Auto Sales Inc., Hartford City, has been distinguished as an exceptional technical service professional by achieving the highest certification level from DaimlerChrysler — the Master Technician. Only five percent of service professionals nationwide achieve this status.

“I am proud of the effort I’ve made toward earning the Master Technician certification,” said Sheron. “I believe that customers expect to have their cars repaired correctly on their first visit, and that takes both diagnostic and repair skills.”
