Smith, Kenney lead Patriots at New Castle (11/20/06)

NEW CASTLE - Jay County came away with two individual champions Saturday as it finished the New Castle Invitational with a 4-3 record.

Senior Tom Smith and sophomore Casey Kenney both finished undefeated as the Patriots topped Columbus East 49-23, Providence 42-34, Lincoln 44-27 and the Indiana School for the Blind 78-0. The losses by scores of 51-21 to Westfield, 58-21 to the host Trojans and 46-24 to Milan.

Smith scored six pins as he finished at 7-0 to win the 189-pound title. Kenney added five pins, also finishing 7-0 for the 103-pound crown.

Sha White (171) had five pins as he finished 5-2, Cameron Pfeifer (112) went 5-1 and Ben Theurer (135) was 5-2.

Caleb Culy (125), Aaron Brenner (145) and Justin Mann (160) each went 4-3.

UC tops Starfire girls

UNION CITY - South Adams' girls basketball team dominated the glass, but shot just 25 percent in a 55-47 loss to the Union City Indians Saturday.

The Starfires (1-3) trailed by only three with eight minutes to play, but were outscored 17-12 in the final period. While Union City (2-0) was not much better from the field (28 percent), it hit seven 3-pointers to just one for South Adams.

Andrea Moser had 15 rebounds, nine points and two blocks as the Starfires won the battle of the boards 48-31. Katie Nichols had seven rebounds and seven assists, and Anne Lehman also grabbed seven boards.

Kayla Coblentz finished with 14 rebounds, four assists and four steals, and Bethany Balsiger had nine points.

Karen Bollenbacher scored five points as the South Adams junior varsity team fell 23-21.

Jay Co. scores 16 wins

CONNERSVILLE - The Jay County Winter Swim Team picked up 16 individual wins, including five from Sok Vormohr, as it competed in the Connersville Invitational this weekend.

Vormohr won all of his events to finish as the high-point swimmer in the 8-and-younger division. He was first in the 50-yard freestyle, 25 butterfly, 25 backstroke, 100 individual medley and 25 freestyle.

Three other Jay County swimmers - Ashley Mark, Anne Vormohr and Sam Miller - also had victories and each finished as high-point winners in their divisions.

Miller scored four victories, winning the male senior 100 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke and 50 freestyle, and Vormohr took first in the 10-and-younger 100 freestyle, 50 butterfly, 50 backstroke and 200 individual medley. Mark added a trio of victories, reaching the wall first in the 25 freestyle, 25 backstroke and 25 freestyle.[[In-content Ad]]
