Snow sparks several accidents (3/17/04)

County police probe five wrecks Tuesday

Slick conditions on snow-covered rural Jay County roads were a contributing factor in five accidents Tuesday, according to accident reports completed by Jay County police.

A rural Portland woman complained of neck pain and was transported by Jay Emergency Medical Service, following an accident at 6:20 a.m. in Pike Township.

Mandy J. Auker, 27, 7592 South 400 West, was driving east on county road 800 South, about 2,600 feet east of county road 250 West, when she lost control of the truck she was driving. Her 2002 Dodge Ram spun around and slid backwards into a ditch on the north side of the road.

Damage to the truck, also registered to Stephen Auker, same address as driver, was estimated at less than $750.

At 2:40 p.m. Nancy S. Coleman, 42, 4993 East 500 South, Portland, was injured after the van she was driving left the road and overturned in a Madison Township ditch.

She refused medical attention for minor facial bleeding, according to police.

Coleman was driving east on county road 300 South, about 500 feet east of county road 400 East, when she lost control of the van. The van struck a culvert on the south side of the road then traveled off of the north side of the road. Coleman’s van overturned onto its top in a steep ditch.

Damage to the 1998 Plymouth Voyager van was estimated between $5,000 to $10,000.

No injuries were reported after a van driven by a rural Portland man collided with a utility pole and a guardrail at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday in Bearcreek Township.

Phillip E. Hayden, 46, 5768 South Como Road, was attempting to turn north off of county road 650 North onto county road 50 West when his van slid on the snow and ice covered road, according to police.

Hayden’s van traveled into a guardrail, owned by Jay County Commissioners, then into a utility pole, owned by Jay County REMC.

Damage the 1995 Dodge van was estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.

At 9:43 a.m. Tuesday, a van driven by a Westfield woman collided with a utility pole and a fence in Bearcreek Township.

Doris M. Alderink, 44, 233 East Emerald Pines Lane, was driving east on county road 300 North, near the intersection of county road 300 East, when the van she was driving spun around and went off of the north side of the road. The van collided with a utility pole owned by Jay County REMC and a fence.

A damage estimate for Alderink’s 2000 Chrysler van was not available from police.

Jay County police also reported that snow on a Noble Township road contributed to a accident involving a Dunkirk man.

Tony E. Lennartz, 33, 11394 West Skeens Drive, was driving west on county road 200 South, 1,600 feet west of State Line Road, when he lost control of his car. The car left the road and struck a telephone box owned by Sprint, and a mailbox owned by Bill Wiliamson, 8824 East 50 North, Fort Recovery.

Damage to Lennartz’s 1990 Honda Accord was estimated at less than $1,000.[[In-content Ad]]
