Snyder, Cooney in new CR positions (11/12/05)

Mike Snyder has been named managing editor of The Commercial Review, editor and publisher Jack Ronald said Friday.

Snyder, a graduate of Franklin College, succeeds the late Barbara Wilkinson, who died in October.

He joined The CR as sports editor in December 1987 and became news editor in the summer of 1997.

Ray Cooney, who has been sports editor since March 2001, has been named assistant managing editor/sports editor, Ronald said. He’s a graduate of Cleveland State University.

In addition, Ronald announced that Mary Ann Lewis, who had taken early retirement from The CR as society editor, is returning to the newspaper’s newsroom as courthouse reporter.

Snyder, Cooney, and Lewis have all been recognized by the Hoosier State Press Association with awards for their writing and reporting.

Banks win award

MainSource Bank and First National Bank of Portland have been chosen to receive the Governor’s Century Business Award.

Representatives from the banks were recognized during a ceremony on Wednesday.

The awards are designed to recognize long-term achievements of Indiana companies.

To be eligible for the award, companies must have been in business for 100 years or more and have a good record of community service.

The banks were nominated by the Portland Area Chamber of Commerce.

MainSource has been in business in the community for 132 years, and First National has been in Jay County for 100 years.

Gibbs to speak

The next Portland Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon will be held Nov. 29 at noon. The event will be held in the conference room of Jay County Hospital, 400 W. Votaw St., Portland. Selena Gibbs of Work One will be speaking about disability employment.

Earns degree

Jay County’s former community developer recently graduated from the University of Oklahoma’s Economic Development Institute.

Wayne Bailey, who now works for Commonwealth Engineers, Inc., graduated on Nov. 3.

There, he learned about strategic planning, real estate, marketing and finance.

ECIWIB to meet

The East Central Indiana Workforce Investment Board will meet Friday from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana, 4301 South Cowan Road, Muncie, in room 532.

Accepts/makes donations

Old National Bank is accepting donations for the American Red Cross for relief efforts for victims of Sunday’s tornadoes, and has pledged $100,000 to the Red Cross.

“Old National Bank and our associates stand ready to assist the Red Cross, along with other public and private agencies, as they help our neighbors in Evansville, Newburgh and Degonia Springs,” said Robert G. Jones, the chief executive officer and president of Old National.

The bank also has vowed to give time off work for employees to help the Red Cross with relief efforts.

Memorial service planned

Bluffton Regional Medical Center plans to hold a memorial service Monday at 7 p.m. at the Wells County 4-H Park in the Community Center. The service is for families who have lost loved ones during the past year.

There will be an invocation and benediction. During the service, family members will receive a remembrance in honor of their loved one. Light refreshments will be served, and baby-sitting will be provided.

Program launched

Indiana University’s Randall Tobias Center for Leadership Excellence has launched a new program for mid-career leaders.

The Hoosier Fellows will be made up of leaders from business, education, government, religion and non-profit areas. This group will conduct a year-long study of leadership.

The program will have 20 to 30 members in each class. The members will attend monthly seminars and networking sessions. The first session will be held Jan. 19-20.
