Snyder powers Jay County gymnasts

Local roundup

NEW CASTLE — Katie Snyder was at her best Saturday as she led the Jay County High School gymnastics team to a runner-up finish at the New Castle Invitational.
Snyder turned in a career-best all-around score of 35.175 as the Patriots finished with 101.275 points. The host Trojans won the meet with 103.425, Daleville was third at 84.975 and Blackford finished with 55.5.
The lone victory of the day for JCHS came from Snyder with a 9.15 on the floor exercise. She also scored a 9.15 to place second on the vault, which was the Patriots’ strongest event of the day.
Tasya Smith followed Snyder with an 8.8 for third place on the vault, and Kristen Ainsworth added an 8.75 for fourth place.
Snyder was also the runner-up on the uneven bars with an 8.475, and finished fourth on the balance beam with an 8.4.
Nikita Gundersen was the No. 2 gymnast for Jay County on the floor (8.475) and bars (8.125). She and Ainsworth each posted scores of 8.0 on the beam.

Jets defeat SAHS
MONROE — The South Adams girls basketball team had a season-low of 16 turnovers Saturday, but still fell to the host Adams Central Flying Jets 35-19.
Katrina Hawkins totaled 10 points, six rebounds and two assists to lead the Starfires (1-16), who managed just two second-quarter points to fall behind by nine at the half. Taylor Farlow grabbed seven rebounds.
Olivia Macklin scored 10 points to lead the Flying Jets as they handed SAHS its 16th straight defeat. Alyssa Keller added seven points.

Vogler qualifies
Rachel Vogler was the lone regional qualifier from the Jay County High Rollers high school bowling team as it competed in sectional action recently.
Vogler finished as the sectional runner-up at the girls individual tournament Thursday. The season came to an end for the boys bowlers at the team tournament Saturday after none had qualified at the individual tournament a week earlier.
Consistency was the key for Vogler, who rolled three games in the 180s for a 550 series as she finished second on her home lanes at The Brown Bowl in Portland. She opened with a 185 and added games of 183 and 182.
The Jay County boys team failed to earn the top-two finish needed to qualify Saturday. Lee Mock turned in the top game with a 192, and Colby Cline had the best two-game series of 366.
Jacob Coy led the High Rollers at the individual sectional, rolling a 584 series with a high game of 214.

EJMS sixth wins
East Jay Middle School’s sixth grade girls basketball team won the Jay County Boomer Invitational Saturday. The West Jay eighth grade boys finished 0-2.
The sixth grade Chiefs defeated Muncie Northside 41-22 for the championship after topping Blackford 24-18 in the opening round. The Eagle eighth graders lost 51-30 to Richmond Dennis and 44-42 to East Jay.
Taylor Homan led East Jay to the championship with 14 points as the team improved to 7-0. Lizzy Schoenlein added six points, and Stormi Canterbury and Alison Jutte each scored six points against Blackford.
Nate Brackman racked up 22 points for West Jay, which led EJMS by 11 in the fourth quarter before fading to the two-point loss. Case Retter, the only other eighth grader on the squad, added 13 points.
Brackman also scored 20 points in the opening loss to Dennis.[[In-content Ad]]
