Sometimes good advice is hard to find
As I See It
By Diana Dolecki-
I went shopping this weekend. I was in search of many things that I thought I would be unable to find, none of which were vital to my well being.
A couple of the items I was after were to complete projects I started years ago. One of the many reasons the tasks have gone unfinished is that I don't have more than the slightest clue as to how to complete said projects.
Around our house not knowing how to do something is no deterrent to diving in head first. When we get stuck we go shopping for supplies and advice.
The supplies are easier to find.
If my mother-in-law was still alive I could ask her how to upholster the settee we rescued from my grandmother's hayloft a couple decades ago. Notice I didn't say re-upholster.
I took it apart when we first brought it home. The brittle leather, horsehair stuffing and even the worn springs made it into the trash so long ago I don't remember when I got tired of seeing them huddled in a heap on the porch and banished them.
I finally grew weary of its skeletal frame hanging around silently chastising me for stripping it bare and leaving it exposed. The weekend before last I gave it a light sanding before I rubbed it down with cherry stain. I could almost hear it purr at the attention. I put a coat of polyurethane on it before the rains started.
It received one more coat of polyurethane Saturday. Now the hard part comes. I have unearthed one of my mother-in-law's upholstery instruction books and performed many Internet searches.
I now have a plan of attack but that's about it. Maybe I should hold a seance and ask her for advice. I sure do miss that woman. She was nice, smart and best yet, she knew how to upholster.
Why is it that when I want advice it is unavailable? But if I don't want to be bothered then everybody wants to tell me what to do and how to do it.
Life is like that. When we think we need a specific item it is nowhere to be found; thus proving that we really don't need it at all. Most of what we think are necessities are really desires.
I know I don't need to reupholster the settee. It wasn't bothering anything sitting around naked. However, I want to finish it because it is the time of year to get things wrapped up and ready for winter. It is finally time to finish this project and move on to something else.
What projects do you have that are crying out for attention? I know you have them, everybody does.
Oh, and does anybody know of any upholstery classes nearby? If not, does anyone around here perform seances so I can ask my mother-in-law for advice?[[In-content Ad]]
