PORTLAND — The Jay County tennis team has been able to count on its No. 1 doubles pair for two things this season. Julie Sours and Erin St. Myers have been its most consistent winners, and they always seem to do it in an entertaining fashion.

Sours and St. Myers gave more of the same as they rallied from a set down for the only Patriot victory in a 4-1 loss to the Muncie Central Bearcats Wednesday.

“They really are an awesome couple,” said Jay County coach Barb Stults of her No. 1 pairing. “They like to keep it interesting for us. They seem to always get their communication going and get themselves back in there.”

The junior duo didn’t look like it had much of a chance against Teresa Sabatine and Kyle Hall after a 6-2 loss in the first set. However, they bounced back to win the second set in a tiebreaker and barely avoid a tiebreaker to win the third and take the match.

“Our first set was just terrible,” said Sours.

“We came out kind of weak,” added St. Myers. “I don’t even know how to describe it.

“We knew after the first set it was going to go three. It was a typical No. 1 doubles match.”

Sours and St. Myers, who have made a habit of playing in tiebreakers and three-set matches, forced themselves into the situation Wednesday after falling behind 3-0 en route to the first-set defeat. They lost the first game of the second set before turning the tide.

The Jay County pair won the next two games, and then alternated games with Sabatine and Hall for a 5-4 lead. Muncie Central jumped back ahead 6-5 only to have Sours serve the set to a 6-6 tie to force the tiebreaker.

The Patriots fell behind again by a 3-1 score in the tiebreaker, but did not lose another point. They took the next six points, four on unforced errors by the Bearcats and two on winners by St. Myers to capture the tiebreaker and push the match to a third set.

Sours and St. Myers again trailed 1-0 in the third set, but took the next two games to pull ahead for good. They led 5-4 and denied Sabatine’s effort to serve the match back to a tie.

Instead, the 10th game went to deuce and then to a Jay County advantage thanks to back-to-back Sabatine double-faults. Sours then made those errors hurt, finishing the match with a volley winner for a 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 final.

“We just started playing our game,” said St. Myers of the second and third sets.

“We had fewer errors,” said Sours. “We beat ourselves in the first set. We just got a lot more focused.”

The focus has been on the No. 1 doubles pair for the relatively inexperienced Jay County team this year.

While the team is 1-9 overall, its top duo sports a winning record. Sours and St. Myers have more than twice as many wins as anyone else on the team, and have surpassed their win total from last year (five).

They have big goals as well.

“We’re going to regional,” said Sours, which was followed by an in unison “no doubt” by the two players.

They will try to continue their success, and the Patriots will look for their first win since the season-opener against Blackford when they visit Muncie Southside Saturday at 3 p.m.

Erin Schmiesing and Erin St. Myers at No. 2 doubles gave Jay County it’s next closest match against the Rebels (7-1).

They trailed 5-2 in the first set before pulling to within striking distance by taking the next two games. However, they could not complete the comeback in the set and fell to a 6-4, 6-1 defeat.

Angie Stults faced the prospect of trying to hand Rachael Newnam her first loss of the season, but couldn’t do much to stop the Muncie Central junior at No. 3 singles. She lost the final game of the first set to Newnam at love in a 6-0, 6-0 defeat.

In other singles matches Whitney Schemenaur fell to Liz Hathaway 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and Stephanie Homan dropped by a 6-2, 6-0 margin at No. 2 singles to Angie Cortwright.

Junior varsity

Jay County’s junior varsity team took a pair of shutouts in a 5-0 loss to Muncie Central, which is now 9-1 on the year.

Muncie Central took a pair of 8-0 victories at No. 2 and 3 singles with Julie Peresie topping the Patriots’ Jessica DeRome, and Sarah Smith defeating Carissa Wilkins. Brianne Morrical came closest to a Jay County win in the other singles match, but fell to Lacey Hutton 8-5.

In doubles matches Jenae Horn and Amanda Hicks dropped an 8-3 decision to Lauren Clevenger and Ashley Anderson, and Megan Knittle and Jessica Muhlenkamp fell to Amanda Frankel and Ashleigh O’Bryant 8-1.[[In-content Ad]]
