South Adams blanks Raiders (05/04/05)

BERNE — The two runs the Starfires scored in the first inning were all Will Grandlinard needed.

Grandlinard allowed just two hits Tuesday night, tossing a shutout in the South Adams baseball team’s 5-0 victory over the Southern Wells Raiders.

With the defense playing error-less ball behind him, Grandlinard never gave Southern Wells a chance. He struck out 11 batters as he went the distance, and did not give up a walk.

Justin Caffee hit a two-run home run to lead the offense. He scored a pair of runs in the victory.

Craig Neuenschwander went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, and Kyle Alberson also scored a pair of runs. Lukas Baumgartner had a single, a run and an RBI.

SA softball loses in 10

BERNE — The South Adams softball team lost 12-9 to Southern Wells in 10 innings Tuesday.

The Starfires led 7-6 heading into the final frame, but Southern Wells scored once in the seventh to tie it. The teams each scored twice in the ninth inning, and the Raiders took the win with three runs in the 10th.

South Adams is now 7-5 on the season and 4-3 in Allen County Athletic Conference play.

Fort baseball blanked

FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery’s baseball team dropped a close one Tuesday, losing 1-0 to the Delphos St. Johns Blue Jays. No statistics were available from the game at press time.

FR JV wins third

DELPHOS, Ohio — The Fort Recovery junior varsity baseball team had half as many hits as the host Delphos St. Johns Blue Jays Tuesday, but still came away with a 4-1 victory.

David Schmitt turned in a solid effort for the Indians (3-10, 1-2 Midwest Athletic Conference). He scattered eight hits and a walk over seven innings and allowed just one run.

Jordan Staugler paced the Fort Recovery offense, which scored once in the first inning, twice in the fourth and once in the seventh. He finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a pair of stolen bases.

Scott Hein had a hit, a run and two steals, and Kenton Sudhoff also had an RBI single.

Soccer clinic set

Jay County High School will host a soccer clinic for all girls interested in playing for the JCHS team this fall.

The clinic, which will be conducted by Bethel College player Zach Sipe, will run June 6 through 10 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. The cost of the clinic is $40.

Pool tickets on sale

Season tickets for the St. Henry, Ohio pool will be on sale Saturday from 10 to noon at the town council meeting room.

Ticket prices will be reduced Saturday at a cost of $65 for a family pass of $35 for a single ticket. Tickets will also be sold during regular pool hours beginning Saturday, May 28 at 1 p.m.

Swim practice set

The first day of practice for the Jay County summer swim team will be Monday at the JCHS pool.

Swimmers 11-and-older will practice from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m., and those 10-and-younger will follow from 5 to 5:45 p.m. Practices will be held every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Registration for the team will be held during the first week of practice. The cost is $35.

Hoop camp scheduled

The Jay County High School boys basketball program will hold its basketball camp for third through eighth graders June 13 through 17.

Third and fourth graders will camp from 10 to 11 a.m., with fifth and sixth graders from 11 a.m. to noon and seventh and eighth graders from 12:30 to 2 p.m. The cost of the camp is $30, which includes a T-shirt.
