South Adams closes regular season with split (05/22/06)

FOUNTAIN CITY — The Starfires’ final competition before the sectional tournament came with a split result.

The South Adams softball team took game one of a double-header against the Northeastern Knights 4-1 Saturday, but dropped the second half of the twin bill 3-2. It will open the Bluffton sectional this week against Adams Central.

Scoreless through five innings of the opening game, the Starfires found their stride in the final two innings. They scored two runs in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh, two of which came on Kayla Coblentz RBIs.

Coblentz finished with a pair of hits. She also scored a run for South Adams (9-14).

Amber Melick had a hit and an RBI, and Jordan Lehman and Maranda Potts each added a single and a run.

Melick picked up the win as the Knights’ only run was unearned. She allowed seven hits and struck out seven batters.

South Adams had a 2-1 lead in the second game, but Northeastern posted two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning which proved to be the winning margin.

Ashton Morgan suffered the defeat, allowing three runs — two earned — on six hits and a walk. She struck out four batters.

Morgan went 3-for-4 with a run, and Coblentz had two hits and a run. Renee Neuenschwander had two hits, including a double, and Melick also added two hits.

Baseball blasts Tigers

FORT WAYNE — The Starfire baseball team made its trip to Fort Wayne’s Memorial Stadium a memorable one.

South Adams scored five times in the first inning and never let the offense slow in a 14-6 victory over the Bluffton Tigers Saturday. It took advantage of eight walks and two Tiger errors to score its 14 runs on just 10 hits.

Jordan Sharp paced the offensive barrage, going 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBIs.

Mike Farris was 2-for-3 with a a triple and three runs.

Will Grandlinard drove in three runs, Cory LeMaster scored twice and Thomas Masterson and Brent Habegger each had a double.

Andrew Caffee picked up the win as he struck out eight batters. He gave up six runs — four earned — on nine hits.[[In-content Ad]]
