South Adams cruises to season-opening win (04/09/04)

Local Roundup

It’s hard to imagine the first game of the season going any better for the South Adams softball team.

On the offensive side the entire lineup hit the ball, with the front of the order setting the pace. The defense and starting pitcher Shante Miller held the Winchester Golden Falcons to just two hits in a five-inning, 10-0 victory Thursday.

Miller walked four and struck out four in the opening victory. The Starfires’ defense — despite three new infielders — did not commit an error.

South Adams took advantage of five miscues by the Golden Falcons, but also got plenty of hits.

Kindle Inniger paced that effort, finishing 2-for-2 with two doubles and a pair of RBIs. She spent much of her day moving Jennifer Rybolt around the bases as the senior center fielder finished with one hit and three runs.

Brooke Fox scored a pair of runs, and Kelly Mertz had a hit, a run and an RBI. LeeAnn Snyder, Kayla Coblentz and Miller each notched a hit and a run.

The Starfires will play their home opener Monday against Southern Wells at 4:30 p.m.

Delta tops Jay

Jay County’s softball team had the lead Thursday, but gave it away with errors in an 8-3 loss to the Delta Eagles.

The visiting Patriots scored twice in the first inning and once in the top of the second. However, Delta tied the game in the bottom of the second, and pulled ahead with two more runs in the third.

Jay County (1-1) committed three errors in the second and third innings as the lead disappeared. The Eagles (3-0) added two more runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth for the final margin.

Junior Brittany Logue suffered the loss, allowing five hits in six innings. She walked seven and struck out two.

Katie Alberson singled and drove in a pair of runs for the Patriots. Saffron Redwine had a hit, a run and an RBI, and Stephanie Imel singled and scored once.

Ashleigh Myers, Chelsea DeBoy and Amber Champ also added one hit apiece.

Jay County will stay on the road when they visit Connersville for an Olympic Athletic Conference double-header Saturday at 11 a.m.

SA tops Bulldogs

Kyle Neuenschwander had a big day Thursday, leading the South Adams baseball to a 6-2 victory over the New Haven Bulldogs.

On the road for the first time this season, the Starfires (2-1) got a solid pitching effort and a lead-off spark from Neuenschwander.

The starting pitcher went the distance, allowing a pair of unearned runs to New Haven (1-3) on four hits. He struck out three and did not walk a batter in seven innings.

Neuenschwander also had a hit, a run scored and an RBI from his lead-off spot in the order. Tyler Sprunger added a big day at bat, finishing 2-for-3 with a pair of runs.

Michael Yoder had a double and an RBI, and Craig Neuenschwander singled and scored twice. Rich Kaup had a single, a run and an RBI, Justin Caffee had a single and an RBI and Kyle White also drove in a run.

South Adams will return home Monday to play Southern Wells at 4:30 p.m.
