South Adams edges Giants

MARION — The Starfires are few in number. But they haven’t let that slow them down.
Buoyed by wins in the opening and closing relays, the South Adams High School girls swim team improved to 2-0 Tuesday with an 85-83 victory over the Marion Giants.
Cady Farlow, Kara DeLong, Ellie Kaverman and Michaela Rupp teamed to win the 400-yard freestyle relay by nearly 50 seconds in 4 minutes, 22.47 seconds, and the Starfires also took third in the event to earn the two-point victory. The same group won the 200 medley relay in 2:08.78.
Rupp, a sophomore, turned in a time of 2:42.69 to pace an SAHS sweep in the 200 individual medley, and also took first place with a time of 1:05.84 in the 100 freestyle. Farlow, a freshman, added a pair of individual wins, finishing first in the 200 freestyle in 2:15.12 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:16.38.
Kristal All, the team’s lone senior, earned its other win in the 100 freestyle in 1:05.84.
Eagle boys lose
UNION CITY — West Jay Middle School’s boys basketball team dropped a heartbreaker 33-32 Tuesday to the Union City West Side Warriors.
The Eagles rallied to tie the score at 32 with just 19 seconds left. However, West Side hit the game-winning free-throw with just nine seconds on the clock.
Joey Springer finished with 12 points to lead WJMS. Daniel Meranda added nine points, and Lance Ferguson had a team-best eight rebounds.
EJ girls win pair
The East Jay Middle School girls basketball teams hosted the Union City West Side Warriors Monday, with the eighth grade Chiefs dominating for a 37-5 victory. The seventh graders also won, 30-23.
Abby Wendel scored nine points to lead the EJMS eighth graders. Gabby Hart had eight points and four rebounds, and Lyla Muhlenkamp chipped in six points.
Taylor Homan led the way for the seventh grade Chiefs with 10 points. Catera Gierhart came up with six points and five steals.[[In-content Ad]]
