South Adams falls in finale

Local roundup

FORT WAYNE — The Starfires came up with one comeback win, but they could not muster a second.
South Adams High School dropped the championship game of the Class 2A Sectional 36 baseball tournament 6-3 Monday to the host Bishop Luers Knights at Indiana Tech. The Starfires had scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning earlier in the day to knock off the Churubusco Eagles 6-5 in the semifinal round.
SAHS (20-11), which had won 10 straight, trailed the Knights 6-0 before putting up three runs in the seventh inning. But with the tying run on deck, Bishop Luers came up with a strikeout to end the game.
The Knights advance to play Central Noble in the regional tournament at 11 a.m. Saturday at Whiting.
Corey Seffernick, who finished 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a run, hit a walk-off single to score Dustin Wanner with the winning run against Churubusco.

Rockets sweep
A pair of comeback wins has the Portland Rockets off to a 3-0 start.
Portland rallied to a 2-1 victory Saturday over the Richmond RiverRats and then swept a Memorial Day doubleheader 9-8 and 14-3 from the Napolean Riverbandits.

The Rockets trailed Napolean 8-4 Monday at Miami University, but got a two-run single from Justin Marrero, a single by 2002 Jay County High School graduate Mitch Waters and a triple from Justin Miller as they rallied to win. Billy Wellman smacked a two-run triple in the first inning of the second game as they cruised to the 11-run victory.
Portland was down 1-0 heading into the final frame against Richmond before Waters singled to drive in the tying run and then scored the game-winner on a triple by Justin Miller.
Winning pitchers on the weekend were Travis Gray, Cody Harrison and Caleb Miller.

Top-10 finish
MONTPELIER — Travis Nichols extended his streak of top-10 finishes to five weeks.
Nichols, of Portland, finished sixth in the Thunder Cars race to lead all local drivers competing Saturday at Montpelier Motor Speedway. He has finished third twice this season, fourth once and seventh once.
