South Adams grapplers top visiting West Jay (02/08/06)

GENEVA — After racking up 10 pins in a victory over East Jay last week, the South Adams wrestling team had another big night against the west side of the county Tuesday. The Starfires scored eight pins in a 52-21 triumph over West Jay.

Gabe Sprunger (80) scored the quick pin of the evening, ending his match against Sam Pitman in 24 seconds. Other first round pins came from Josh Ehr (95), Braden Baer (105), Stuart Poulson (110), John Striker (115) and Jimmy West (HWT).

Also scoring pins were Jordan Landers (85) and Cajon Dailey (100). Nick Taylor (145) added a 13-2 major decision.

Three of West Jay’s four wins came on pins, with Ethan Lightner (160) scoring his in 49 seconds. Keri VanSkyock (152) and Justin Ellis (130) also added pins for the Eagles, and Chris Mooney (135) won by a 12-8 decision.

Fort smashes Cards

FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery’s middle school basketball teams clobbered the New Bremen Cardinals Tuesday.

The eighth graders held New Bremen to two points in the first and third quarters for a 33-18 win, and the seventh grade team limited the Cardinals to two points in each of the first three quarters in a 34-14 victory.

The Indian eighth grade team (8-5) was up 8-2 after the first quarter and pushed the lead to 10 points at halftime and 16 after three quarters. Chelsey Leuthold scored a team-high 12 points, Nicole Pottkotter had eight and Josie Guggenbiller scored six.

The seventh graders (10-3) were up by just two after the first period, but surged to an 11-point lead at halftime. They were led by Nicole Dilworth with 13 points while Nichole Kaiser and Stacy Will each added four.

Jay places fifth

OSSIAN — Jay County’s middle school girls swim team finished fifth at the eight-team Norwell Invitational Tuesday.

Jay County totaled 114 points, three ahead of Bluffton. South Adams was third with 197 behind second-place Indian Springs (297) and the first-place host Knights (346).

Michaela Long, a sixth grader, had the best finish for Jay County as she took third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1-minute, 21.46 seconds. Michelle Landfair added a fourth-place effort in the 100 freestyle in 1:06.78.

Erika Waugh led South Adams by placing third in the 200 freestyle in 2:26.03.

Eagles defeat UC

DUNKIRK — The West Jay sixth grade boys basketball team eked out a victory over Union City Westside Tuesday, 14-13.

Dustin Selvey paced West Jay with eight points. Devin Conatser, Kaleb Bell and Taylor Hatzell each added two points.

Dylan Friddle and Eathan Phillips had six points apiece as the B team won 12-9.[[In-content Ad]]
