South Adams' Habegger sets two record (04/17/04)

Collegiate check-up

South Adams athletes continue to make their mark at Bluffton College.

Amanda Habegger had the most outstanding recent effort by a former Starfire as the track teams won the Yellow Jacket Classic at Defiance College Saturday, April 10. She broke one record on her own, and joined three teammates to snap another.

Habegger, Cindy Allan, Jana Hammer and Rita Muether scooted to a new Bluffton record in the 4x100-meter relay with a winning time of 50.33 seconds.

She also added her name to the Beaver record book in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.12. She was second in the race, and fellow former Starfire Jenny Lehman was third in 16.24.

Habegger, a junior, added a fifth-place finish in the pole vault at 2.44 meters.

Steph Welch, a 2002 South Adams graduate, added a couple more top-three finishes. She was second in the 400-meter dash in 1-minute, 3.71 seconds. She also placed third in the long jump at 4.49 meters.

Junior Jason Lehman joined in on a relay win for the men’s team. The 2001 SAHS grad teamed with Dan Rosebrock, Shandon North and Colby Bright to win the 4x400-meter relay in 3:29.84.

He was also second in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:00.98 and third in the 100-meter dash in 11.33.

The three former Starfire women also performed well in fourth-place team finish Saturday, April 3 as Bluffton hosted the Beaver Invitational.

Habegger and Welch shared the best result for the Beavers at that meet, each notching a fourth-place finish.

Habegger placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:09.85. She was also seventh in the pole vault at 2.45 meters and ninth in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.37.

She teamed with Hammer, Allen and Muether to take fourth in the 4x100-meter relay in 50.97.

Welch had her best effort as she took fourth in the high jump at 1.45 meters. She also took 11th in the long jump with a leap of 4.62 meters.

Habegger and Welch also joined Muether and Hammer for a fourth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay.

Byrum blazing

A Jay County graduate has continued his outstanding season on the mound for the Indiana Tech baseball team.

Pete Byrum, a senior, has earned wins in each of his two most recent starts, allowing just one unearned run in the games.

Byrum’s most recent win came Friday, April 8 against Siena Heights.

He tossed nine innings, allowing three runs — one earned — on four hits in the 9-3 victory. He walked four and struck out six.

The former Patriot was even better in a 15-0 April 3 destruction of Aquinas.

He went seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits. He struck out six and walked two.

Byrum remains the No. 2 pitcher on the staff in terms of ERA with a 1.89 mark. He is 3-2 on the year, and has struck out 27 batters in 38 innings while issuing just eight walks.

McClung returns with win

Jay County graduate Kerri McClung was out for the indoor season and the beginning of the outdoor campaign. But, when she returned to the Bowling Green Falcon track team it was as if nothing had changed.

In her first meet back McClung picked up exactly where one would expect. She finished first in the shot put at the Beaver Invitational at Bluffton College Saturday, April 3 with a toss of 13.28 meters.

The senior helped Bowling Green dominate the event as it won with 337 points. Ferris State was a distant second at 136 points.

McClung also performed well at the University of Tennessee’s Sea Ray Relays Saturday, April 10.

She was 10th at the invite in the shot put at 14.32 meters. She also placed 12th in the hammer throw with a launch of 43.97 meters.

Jay grads rolling

Four former Jay County baseball players are showing off their skills at Ancilla College.

Sophomore Mitch Waters has made the biggest mark thus far offensively. He is hitting a team-best .371 in 62 at-bats this year, and has knocked four doubles. He has a team-high 14 RBIs to go along with 10 runs and a pair of stolen bases.

Waters has also posted a 3.37 ERA for Ancilla (12-14). He has 19 strikeouts in 182/3 innings and has issued 10 walks.

Freshman Josh Jellison has been even more outstanding on the hill as he sits with a 2.54 ERA. He has racked up 37 strikeouts against just six walks in 281/3 innings.

Kyle Champ, a sophomore, is not far behind Waters at the plate with his .368 batting average. He has eight RBIs, eight runs, three doubles and three stolen bases on the year.

Another sophomore, Devon Phillips, is batting .278 with one double. He has nine RBIs, three runs and two stolen bases.

Minch lifts Bluffton

South Adams graduate Amanda Minch had a huge game Tuesday in leading the St. Francis softball team past Taylor in the second game of a double-header. She is one of several local graduates playing for the Cougars.

Minch drove in three of the of St. Francis’ five runs in the 5-3 victory. She had one hit — a double — in the win.

She also had a pair of hits in the first game against Taylor, an 8-0 defeat.

Fellow former Starfire Carrie Nichols finished the second contest 1-for-3.

Minch also had some big hits in a double-header against Grace College Thursday, April 8.

She smashed her first home run of the year with a solo shot in the first inning of game one, a 3-0 St. Francis win. She also had an RBI double.

The senior catcher added a double and two RBIs in a 12-1, game-two victory, and Nichols also had an RBI.

Minch added two doubles and two RBIs in an 8-0 shutout of Madonna Saturday, April 3. She was also 2-for-3 in a 4-2 victory in the second game of a double-header against Concordia Friday, April 2.

Nichols led the game-one win over Concordia, crushing a solo home run in the third inning. It was her sixth home run of the season.

Fort Recovery graduate is also seeing time for St. Francis. The freshman has been the starting shortstop for much of the season.

SA quartet leading Bluffton

The Bluffton College men’s tennis team has been hitting the courts at a furious pace recently, with four South Adams graduates holding the key to its fate.

Seniors Brad Boyles and Kyle Sprunger and sophomores Pete Martin and Zach Nussbaum — all former Starfires — have been holding down spots in the Beavers’ starting lineup.

The group had their best effort in a 9-0 shutout of Mount St. Joseph Saturday, April 3.

Boyles won his No. 2 singles match, 6-1, 6-1, and Sprunger rolled at No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-0. The pair teamed at No. 2 doubles to take an 8-0 victory.

At No. 5 singles Martin clobbered his way to a 6-1, 6-0 victory, and Nussbaum cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles. Those two teamed at No. 3 doubles for an 8-4 victory.

Boyles added a 6-2, 6-0 victory in a 6-3 win for the Beavers (7-5) over Manchester, Sprunger won 6-0, 6-0 and Martin was victorious at 6-2, 6-1. Boyles and Sprunger teamed for an 8-1 doubles victory in that Saturday, April 10 match.

Boyles and Sprunger scored singles victories 7-5, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-2 against Anderson Wednesday April 7. They also teamed for an 8-3 doubles win.

Martin and Nussbaum added a doubles win against Anderson by an 8-4 mark.

Sprunger scored one of Bluffton’s only two singles victories in a 6-3 loss to Ohio Northern Saturday, April 6. He and Boyles triumphed by an 8-3 score in doubles action.

Boyles and Sprunger also scored an 8-3 doubles victory in a 7-2 loss to Transylvania Thursday, April 8.

Neuenschwander hits, wins

Cory Neuenschwander, a South Adams graduate, has done some solid work for the Taylor University baseball team both at the plate and on the mound recently.

Neuenschwander aided the Trojans (12-18) to a 7-2 victory in the second game of a double-header against Grace College Saturday, April 10. He finished with two hits and an RBI.

He also had a big day against Grace from the mound in a double-header Thursday, April 8. He improved to 4-0 on the season, limiting Grace to just four hits in a 4-1 victory.

Local duo boosts Bluffton

A pair of area graduates helped power the Bluffton College baseball team Wednesday as it won for the second time in three games Wednesday, April 14 against Earlham.

The Beavers (7-19) are having a rough season, but thanks in part to South Adams graduate Kyle Alberson and Fort Recovery graduate Bob Heitkamp they have won twice in the span of less than a week.

Heitkamp posted two hits on the evening, including a two-out, three-run home run in the ninth inning. He racked up six RBIs.

Alberson had a double in the contest.

Alberson also had a nice game in a double-header split against Manchester Friday, April 3. He finished with a home run and a double.

He is currently third on the team with a .326 batting average, while holding a team-high of 27 RBIs. He also is best on the team with a .674 slugging percentage, 19 runs, 12 walks, nine doubles and seven home runs.

Heitkamp has made just six starts this year and has a .227 batting average and .409 slugging percentage. He has 11 RBIs, seven runs, one double and one homer.

Sprunger shining

Sophomore Brett Sprunger, a South Adams graduate, has turned in a nice season for the University of Indianapolis men’s golf team thus far.

In his most recent meet, Sprunger finished third on the team and 29th overall at the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament Monday, April 12. He shot rounds of 80 and 82 for a 162 total.

Sprunger was second on the team at the University of Indianapolis Invitational Tuesday, April 6. He matched teammate Ryan McKinney with an 80.

He also tied for 21st overall at the Anderson Invitational Sunday, April 4 with a 166.

Sprunger is averaging 80.25 strokes per 18 holes this season.[[In-content Ad]]
