South Adams knocks off Jets (05/29/07)

BLUFFTON - The Starfires won the game that mattered most.
After splitting with the Adams Central Jets during the regular season, the South Adams baseball team took a 5-2 victory in Monday's rubber match in the opening round of the Class 2A sectional at Bluffton.
SAHS took a 2-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the third inning and never gave up the lead. They were up 4-1 after the fourth inning, and both teams scored once in the fifth for the final margin.
Andrew Caffee led the Starfires at the plate and on the mound, where he allowed just two runs - one earned - one five hits and two walks. He also struck out three in the victory.
Caffee was also 2-for-3 for the South Adams offense. He had a double and a triple while scoring twice and driving in one run.
Ethan Sharp added a two-run home run, and Brent Habegger and Jordan Steiner each scored once.
Jay 18th in strong field
MUNCIE - The sectional tournaments do not begin until this weekend. But the Jay County boys golf team got a taste of state competition Saturday.
The Patriots finished 18th in a 19-team Muncie Invitational field which included seven of the top 20 teams in Indiana.
JCHS scored 388 at The Players Club, finishing ahead of Muncie Southside (418). No. 6 Noblesville won at 291, and No. 2 Avon scored a 299. They were followed by No. 19 Yorktown (301), No. 1 Carmel (303), No. 4 Plainfield (310), No. 11 Center Grove (312) and No. 14 Richmond (315).
Adam Gray had a solid day for the Patriots with an 82 in the tournament which saw five players shoot even par or better. Eric Stegler of Noblesville was the medalist at a 5-under-par 67.
Gray had seven pars in his round, including four in a row to close the front nine. He also posted a birdie on the 559-yard, par-5 fourth hole as he shot 2-over on the front nine.
Chris Shannon followed Gray with a 99, Justen Moser shot 102 and Jonathan Fennig capped the team score with a 105. Aaron Daniels finished at 114.
Geneva splits double-header
GENEVA - A no-hitter marked a good kick-off to the Geneva Cardinals' 2007 season, but they finished their opening weekend 1-1.
Geneva's Matt Perkins and Mark Miller combined for a no-no in a 6-1 opening victory over Van Wert Saturday, but dropped game two by the same score. Games scheduled in Mishawaka Sunday and Kokomo Monday were rained out.
Perkins tossed five no-hit innings the Cardinals' 2007 debut, giving up just one unearned run with one walk and 10 strikeouts. Miller struck out two as he finished the no-hitter.
Julian Bostleman powered the offense by going 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and three stolen bases. Kraig Miller, Erik Hisner and Kris Nealiegh each added a pair of hits.
Jared Baker suffered the loss in the second game, although just one of the five runs against him was earned. Matt Hille had two hits for Geneva.[[In-content Ad]]
