South Adams knocks off Lions (05/10/04)

The South Adams baseball got a fifth-inning surge to defeat the Leo Lions 6-4 Saturday.
The Starfires fell behind 3-1 in the third inning, but pulled back within one in the fourth. They scored four times in the fifth inning to take control.
The Kyles — Neuenschwander and White — took care of most of the South Adams offense.
Neuenschwander went 2-for-4 with a triple. He drove in three runs and scored twice.
White had yet another great game, finishing 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Doug Roop added three hits, and Tyler Sprunger scored twice.
Neuenschwander also earned the victory in relief of Sprunger and Aaron Givens. He allowed one run on three hits in 3 2/3 innings.
The Starfires will visit Heritage Monday at 4:30 p.m.
Stars 2nd in ACAC
The South Adams tennis team finished as the Allen County Athletic Conference tournament runners-up Saturday after a 4-1 loss to the Bluffton Tigers in the championship match. The Starfires defeating Adams Central 3-2 in the semifinals.
Michelle Dubach scored the only win for South Adams against Bluffton, topping Mallory King 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. In other singles matches Alyssa Miller fell to Audrey Ballinger 6-2, 6-2 and Renee Rybolt lost to Danielle Geisel 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles action No. 1 pair Stacy Pyle and Katie Sprunger dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Christina Yoder and Claire Peterson. At the No. 2 spot Erica Stein and Whitney Liechty fell to Julie Coratti and Tess Crickard 6-3, 7-5.
Miller and Rybolt each won against Adams Central by scores of 6-0, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-0 respectively. Stein and Belinda Rigby got the other victory, topping Jessica Andrews and Aime King 6-4, 6-3.
Dubach lost a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 decision to Lindsey Cloninger, and Sprunger and Pyle fell to Amanda Isch and Ashley Fiechter 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.
South Adams will play at home today against Blackford at 4:30 p.m.

The South Adams softball team continued to struggle Saturday, notching just one hit in a 10-0, five-inning loss to Bellmont.
Renee Neuenschwander (5-0) took the loss, allowing 10 runs — seven earned — on 11 hits for the Starfires (2-12). She walked five batters and struck out two.
Kayla Coblentz had a single for the only South Adams hit.
The Starfires will visit Heritage today at 4:30 p.m.

The South Adams sports physicals which were scheduled for Wednesday have been postponed. A make-up date has not yet been set.
Also, SAHS is looking for several coaches for the 2004-05 season. It is in need of a seventh grade girls basketball coach, an eighth grade volleyball coach and a freshman/junior varsity cheerleading coach.
