South Adams picks new superintendent (05/13/06)
By By BETH A. CLAYTON-
BERNE — Before a large gathering of teachers and community members, the South Adams Schools board of education approved Cathy Egolf as the system’s new superintendent.
Egolf, currently the superintendent at Southwestern Consolidated Schools in Shelby County, has also served as superintendent for Bicentennial Union High School district and was a high school principal in Pike County school district and at Caston Junior-Senior High School, in addition to being a high school teacher at Whitley County Consolidated Schools.
“I am very excited to be here,” said Egolf, who added that she is ready to jump in when her position becomes effective July 1. “The immediate goal is to assess and evaluate with the staff and community what is best for South Adams students.”
Egolf earned a bachelor of arts degree in sociology from Purdue University, but later attended Indiana University to earn both a bachelor of science and a master of science in special education.
Egolf has also attended numerous workshops and seminars concerning school safety, finance, curriculum development and bargaining.
“I’ve been involved in negotiation both as a teacher and an administrator,” said Egolf.
Her bargaining skills will be crucial if the school board and teachers are unable to reach a contract agreement soon.
Current superintendent Connie Bailey said in March when she announced her retirement that she was hopeful an agreement could be reached before she retired, but little progress has been made despite numerous executive school board sessions pertaining to bargaining.
“No update,” Bailey with a smile when asked if an agreement was close to being reached. “I’m still hoping.”
Bailey added that she is pleased with the board’s decision, given there were only eight applicants for the job.
“I’m excited they were able to hire an experienced superintendent,” she said. “I’m looking forward to a smooth transition.”
Egolf, who was named Educator of the Year 2004 by the Indiana Association of Educational Office Professionals, and her husband, Gary, have two grown children, Christine and Andy.
Bailey said that she is looking forward to her retirement, which is effective June 30, and plans to spend more time with her children, who live in Colorado.[[In-content Ad]]
