South Adams rallies in 7th (04/28/05)

MONROE — Amber Melick took control after the first inning. The Starfire bats finished the job in the last one.

The South Adams softball team rallied from a four-run deficit Wednesday, scoring four runs in the seventh inning for a 5-4 victory over the Adams Central Jets.

Adams Central scored four runs — two earned — in the first inning against Melick. But, she allowed just six hits for the game and blanked the Jets the rest of the way.

South Adams scored once in the fifth and then erupted in its final at-bat to take the victory.

Brooke Fox paced the effort for the Starfires, who improved to 6-4 overall and 3-2 in the Allen County Athletic Conference. She finished 3-for-4 with a couple of RBIs.

Renee Neuenschwander went 2-for-3 with a run. Melick finished with a single, a run and an RBI, and Kindle Inniger and Kayla Coblentz each had a single and a run.

WJ boys top Raiders

PONETO — Three athletes combined for seven of the Eagles’ eight victories as the West Jay boys track team knocked off the Southern Wells Raiders 61-48 Wednesday. The girls team lost to Southern Wells, 73-36.

Brady Mills paced the boys team with a trio of victories, including a pair of wins in the long distance events, and Andrew Lancaster and Don McCowan added two wins apiece.

Mills took the 1,600-meter run in 5-minutes, 45 seconds, and was first in the 800 run in 2:32. He also won the long jump by nearly a foot at 14 feet, seven inches.

Lancaster took the throwing events, finishing first in the discus at 119 feet and the shot put at 38 feet, one inch. McCowan won the 200 hurdles in 30.8 seconds, and was also first in the high jump at four feet, seven inches.

Sha White accounted for the other Eagle victory, taking the top spot in the 110 hurdles in 18.7.

Lindsey Current earned the only win for the girls team in the high jump.

Club to start

The sign-up session for the newly-formed Jay County Running and Walking Club will be Saturday, May 21 at the Jay County High School track.

The session with be from 10 a.m. to noon, and the registration fee is $20. Registration forms and a calendar of events is available at JCHS and East Jay and West Jay middle schools.
