South Adams splits against Norwell

OSSIAN - Saturday's double-header brought mixed results for the Starfires.

The South Adams High School softball team ran its record to 4-0 with a 3-1 victory in its opening game against the host Norwell Knights. But then it took its first loss of the season, dropping game two 6-1.

Ashton Morgan tossed a two-hitter to earn the victory in the first game, in which the Starfires never trailed. She walked five batters, but struck out 11.

Freshman Kysha Cox, the No. 9 hitter, came up big with two hits, an RBI and a stolen base. Liz Smith added a double and a run.

South Adams managed just one run in the second game despite totaling 10 hits. Morgan went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Brianna Nevil had two hits and Cox scored the lone run.

Gray shoots 2-over

DECATUR - Adam Gray and the Jay County golf team each placed third Saturday at the Bellmont Invitational.

The Patriots scored a 344 as a team, finishing six strokes behind runner-up Bellmont. Norwell ran away with the eight-team event with a score of 300.

Gray shot even par on the front nine at Cross Creek Golf Club en route to his 2-over-par 74 total. He finished just one stroke off the winning pace.

Adam Horn shot 42 on the front and back to finish with an 84 for JCHS. Chase Wellman got off to a hot start with a 3-over-par 39 on the front nine, but struggled on the back to finish at 89.

Bard Horn and Drew Houck each finished at 97.

JC JV softball loses

RICHMOND - The Richmond Red Devils handed Jay County's junior varsity softball team its first loss of the season 14-4 Saturday.

Whitni Somers took the loss, allowing 14 runs on 10 hits. She struck out five and did not walk a batter.

Anneliese Jetmore went 2-for-4 for the Patriots with a pair of runs.

Renae Ray added a hit, a run and two RBIs.[[In-content Ad]]
