South Adams wins invitational

BERNE — The Starfires trailed in both games Saturday, but still walked away with the title.
South Adams High School’s baseball team rallied for a 5-2 victory over the Eastside Blazers in its tournament opener and then knocked off the Concordia Cadets 6-5 to win the championship as it hosted the Starfire Invitational.
Dustin Wanner powered the Starfires to the championship win, in which SAHS gave up four runs in the first inning. He went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs against Concordia, and Corey Seffernick had three hits, two RBIs and one run.
Nick Batt went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI in the opener for South Adams, which trailed 1-0 before scoring five straight runs. Alex Augsburger drove in a pair of runs, and Collin Affolder had a hit, a run and an RBI.
Batt earned the championship win, striking out seven batters as he went the distance. Augsberger went 5 2/3 innings to beat Eastside, and Blake Fox tossed one inning for the save.
SA softball splits
MARION — The South Adams softball team won its opening game of the Eastbrook Invitational 6-3 Saturday over Eastern (Greentown) before dropping the championship game 8-4 to the host Panthers.
Brianna Nevil led the victory as she drove in four runs, scored twice and had two hits. Lily Taing had two hits and an RBI.
Alyssa Bluhm pitched the Starfires to the win, giving up three runs — two earned — on six hits and two walks. She struck out two batters.
Taing took the championship defeat, allowing eight runs — six earned — on 11 hits and three walks.
Bluhm went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run and an RBI, and Nevil had a single, two RBIs and a run.
Nichols takes 4th
MONTPELIER — Travis Nichols turned in the top finish among local drivers in Saturday’s action at Montpelier Motor Speedway.
Nichols, a Portland resident, took fourth place in the Thunder Cars race. Brian Baldauf and Jeff Baldauf, both of Portland, finished 11th and 12th respectively.
Jamie Heiser, Fort Recovery, finished seventh in the Supers Streets race, and Portland’s Richard Williams followed in 10th.
Mason Stewart, Portland, was 10th in the UMP Modifieds event.[[In-content Ad]]
