Speech contest winners announced
Taking Note
Area schools announced the winners of the Optimist Oratorical Speech Contests where students spoke on the topic "Cyber Communications - Problem or Progress?"
At Pennville Elementary the winners were John Crosbie, the fifth grade son of JC and Karen Crosbie, Pennville, and Kayla Hemm, the fifth grade daughter of Michael and Jeni Paxson, rural Bryant.
The runners-up were Gavin Corwin, the fourth grade son of Alicia Corwin and Justin Saxman, Pennville, and Kyndal Miller, the fifth grade daughter of Craig and Vicki Miller, rural Pennville.
At East Elementary in Portland the winners were Carlie Wickey, the fifth grade daughter of Nichole and Todd Wickey, and Noah Hummel, the fourth grade son of Jennifer and Gregory Hummel.
The runners-up were Sydney Barber, the fifth grade daughter of Julie and Glynn Barber, and Markus Duncan, the fifth grade son of Shavonne and Shawn Duncan.
The winners will compete in the Jr. Oratorical Contest at Pennville Elementary School on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at 6:30 p.m.
Guard places
The Patriot Winter Guard began its 2010 season by performing the show "Ramalama" at the Bishop Dwenger Invitational in Fort Wayne. The guard placed second in Class AAA and scored high enough to earn a promotion to Class AA.
"Ramalama" was designed by Emilie Garringer, Jay County School Corporation music teacher, and Amy Grady, a former guard member.
Guard members will compete again on Saturday at the Pike High School Invitational in Indianapolis.
Bee winner
Pennville Elementary School held its annual Spelling Bee on Monday.
The winner was fifth grader Robert Wine, the son of Ronney and Krista Wine, Pennville. The runner-up was Kayla Hemm, the daughter of Michael and Jeni Paxson, rural Bryant.
Robert will compete in the Regional Spelling Bee on Saturday, Feb. 27, at the Cornerstone Center for the Arts in Muncie.
Wins scholarship
Joshua Werling, Fort Recovery, received a $1,000 scholarship from the Ohio Cattle Women's Association at their recent banquet.
Joshua is employed at Werling and Sons Stockyard and Slaughterhouse. He is the son of Rick and Carol Werling, Fort Recovery.
Dean's list
Shelby J. Claycomb made the dean's list for the fall 2009 semester at Vincennes University. She attends Vincennes Satellite/Remote Campus in Indianapolis at the Indiana School for the Deaf. The daughter of Matthew and Tonya Claycomb, Pennville, Shelby is pursuing a degree in American Sign Language Interpreting.

Several Fort Recovery students made the dean's list at the University of Cincinnati for the fall quarter: Brittany Brackman, Travis Hart, Tyler Huelskamp, Joshua Long, Stanley Roessner, Tina Roessner and Vicki Roessner.

Jonathan Hart, Fort Recovery, made the dean's list at the University of Northwestern Ohio College of Technologies for the November session of 2009.
Charles Shier, Fort Recovery, made the dean's list at Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio.
Greg Faller, Fort Recovery, received a bachelor's degree in education from The Ohio State University.
