Speech winners announced (02/17/2009)
Taking Note

Megan Johnson and Jacob Geesaman were the winners of the Optimist Oratorical Contest at Redkey Elementary School. Megan is a fourth grade student and the daughter of Matt and Jennifer Johnson. Jacob is also a fourth grader and the son of Lisa and Jeff Geesaman.
The alternates were Lillian Rogers, the daughter of Kristen Brown, and Luke Moles, the son of Sussana Moles.
Ava Kunkler and Matt Blackford were the winners of the Optimist Oratorical Contest at East Elementary School. Ava is a fifth grade student and the daughter of Brian and Becky Kunkler. Matt is also a fifth grader and the son of David and Jennifer Blackford.
The alternates were Abigail Saxman, the daughter of Bill and Misi Saxman, and Christian Peterson, the son of Michael and Leslie Peterson.
Science fair winners
Pennville Elementary School recently held its Science Fair.
Justice Murphy was the winner in kindergarten. He is the son of Jason and Cindy Murphy.
Ethan Andreshak and Allison Jobe, first grade students, were co-champions. Ethan is the son of Mike and Kerri Andreshak, and Allison is the daughter of Brian and Lisa Jobe.
Conner Benter was the winner in second grade. He is the son of Scott and Brenda Benter.
Gavin Corwin was the winner in third grade. He is the son of Alicia Corwin.
Jennifer Walter was the winner in fourth grade. She is the daughter of Don and Laurel Walter.
Emily Jobe was the winner in fifth grade. She is the daughter of Brian and Lisa Jobe.
Regional qualifiers in third grade were Gavin Corwin; Brady Vore, the son of Joseph and Amy Vore; and Jasmine Carpenter, the daughter of Angie Carpenter.
Qualifying for the regional in fourth grade were Jennifer Walter; John Crosbie, the son of JC and Karen Crosbie; and Kyndal Miller, the son of Craig and Vicki Miller.
Regional qualifiers in fifth grade were Emily Jobe; Colton Bost, the son of John and Sandy Bost; and Troy Glattli, the son of Ed and Brenda Glattli.
Regional qualifiers will participate in the East Central Indiana Science Fair on Feb. 28 in Ball Gymnasium at Ball State University.
Book sale
The Friends of the Library will have a used book sale at Fort Recovery Public Library Feb. 16 to 21. Books to be donated may be dropped off at the library.
Students of month
West Jay Middle School named its student of the month for January.
In sixth grade was Noah Claycomb, the son of Matthew and Tonya Claycomb.
In seventh grade was Sam Selvey, the son of Eric Selvey and Michelle Jackson.
In eighth grade was Shelby Wendel, the daughter of Chad and Jennifer Wendel.
Graduates
The following area residents graduated from Purdue University in December.
Andrew Joseph Baldauf, Portland, earned a bachelor of science degree from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology.
Jenna Nichole Flesher, Ridgeville, earned a bachelor of science degree from the College of Agriculture.
Dennis Kent Owens, Ridgeville, earned a bachelor of science degree from the Department of Computer Graphics Technology.
Spelling Bee
Alli Campbell won the spelling bee at Redkey Elementary School. She is a fourth grader and the daughter of Stacy and Craig Campbell.
Lance Ferguson was the runner-up. He is a fifth grader and the son of Tom and Jane Ferguson.
Hanna Fields won the spelling bee at Pennville Elementary School. She is a fifth grade student and the daughter of Daryl and Lisa Fields.
Angela Rowles was the runner-up. She is a fifth grader and the daughter of Dale and Brenda Rowles.
Campbell and Fields will compete in the Regional Spelling Bee at the Cornerstone Center for the Arts in Muncie on March 7.
Dean's list
Two Jay County High School graduates were named to the dean's list at Huntington University for the fall term of 2008.
Bryant's Jill Elizabeth Roughia, who is pursuing a bachelor's degree in history education, earned the honor. She is the daughter of Jon and Ginger Roughia.
Also making the list was Portland's Zachary Kevin Keller, who is pursuing a bachelor's degree in mathematics education. He is the son of Kevin and Christine Keller.
The following students were named to the dean's list or honor roll for the first semester of the 2008-09 academic year at the University of Indianapolis: Miranda Betz, Sara Franks, Justen Moser, William Spahr and Nathan Tomey, all of Portland; Joshua Greenlee, Robert Helfst, Paige Hummel and Ambrosia Moore, all of Dunkirk; and Kaylee Taylor, Redkey.[[In-content Ad]]
