MUNCIE - A pair of six-run innings and another big offensive day from Pazia Speed led the Jay County softball team to a 15-4, five-inning victory Monday over Olympic Athletic Conference rival Muncie Southside Rebels.
Speed smacked a pair of doubles, drove in three runs and scored twice for the Patriots (5-3, 1-2 OAC), who posted six runs in the first and third innings. Senior Shae Keller also had two doubles to go along with a single and three runs.
Morgan Locke, Trisha Champ, Amanda Alberson and Kaelee Keller added two hits apiece. Locke drove in three runs and scored twice, Champ finished with three runs and two RBIs and Alberson had two doubles and a pair of RBIs.
Keller improved to 4-3 on the hill as she tossed four innings for the win. She allowed four runs - two earned - and struck out five before turning the ball over to Anastasia Turner to finish the game.
JC golfers fall
FARMLAND - Hickory Hills Golf Course was not kind to the Patriots Monday as they shot their worst score of the year in falling to the Winchester Golden Falcons and host Monroe Central Golden Bears.
Jay County's boys golf team posted a 197, 17 strokes over their previous high score, to finish third in the group. Monroe Central won at 175, and the Golden Falcons were second with a 185.
Adam Gray had one of the three pars for the Patriots as he shot a team-best 46. Gray Suman followed with a 48, Jonathon Fennig put up a 50 and C.J. Comer completed the team score with a 53.
Justen Moser shot 56.
Stars fall to New Haven
BERNE - The South Adams baseball team just couldn't keep the New Haven Bulldogs off the board in the late innings Monday as it took a 9-7, nine-inning loss.
The Starfires led 6-5 going into the seventh inning only to give up the tying run in the top of the final frame. Both teams scored a single run in the eighth inning to keep the game going, and New Haven posted two runs in the top of the ninth.
Three of the Bulldog runs came because of errors while South Adams had to earn everything it got. Jordan Sharp took the loss in relief as he gave up three runs - two earned - in two innings.
Brent Habegger led the Starfires with a 4-for-5 day at the plate. He had a double, a run and four RBIs. Sharp added three hits, including a double, three runs and one RBI.[[In-content Ad]]
