Speed, Link lead Patriots

PARKER CITY - A quick start helped the Patriots end their short skid.

Jay County High School's girls basketball team took a 10-point lead in the opening period on the way to halting their two-game losing streak with a 53-39 win Saturday over the host Monroe Central Golden Bears (12-5).

Pazia Speed racked up 23 points for the Patriots, who were up 14-4 at the end of the first quarter and extended the lead to 14 points at halftime. She also had seven assists and six rebounds.

Danielle Link added 13 points and five boards, and Mariah Hornaday grabbed eight rebounds.

JCHS, which had dropped its previous two games to Huntington North and Connersville by a combined five points, improved to 13-5. The team has not lost three consecutive games since the 2006-07 season.

In the 45-42 loss to Connersville Jan. 16, Hornaday scored 12 points and Speed added 11.

Jay County's junior varsity squad recorded 13 steals and held the Golden Bears to four second-half points Saturday in a 29-21 win. Mollie May led the team with 13 points and eight rebounds, and Hannah Ainsworth scored seven points.

Mariah Murphy totaled 18 points and Rachelle Jackson had 10 in the JV team's 35-32 win over Connersville.

Four win OAC titles

ANDERSON - Four Jay County wrestlers finished in first place Saturday as the team placed third in the Olympic Athletic Conference tournament hosted by Anderson Highland.

The Patriots went 1-2 with their lone win coming by a 43-23 score over Muncie Southside. They fell 42-33 to champion Connersville and 38-27 to the host Scots.

Drake Meska (130), Matt James (215), Kyler Blowers (HWT) and Kyle Davidson (140) all won OAC championships for Jay County with perfect 3-0 records. Nathan Drumm (135) and Nick Leonhard (145) each went 2-1 to finish in second place.

Chiefs win in tourney

The East Jay Middle School girls basketball teams rolled to a pair of championships Saturday.

The eighth grade Chiefs defeated Yorktown 32-23 in the championship game of the East Jay Invitational, and the seventh graders topped Winchester Driver 33-15.

Katlin Petro had nine points in the title game for the EJMS eighth graders, who were up 11-3 after the first quarter. Katie Aker added six points.

Abigail Johnson scored eight points the squad's 33-5 semifinal victory over Monroe Central.

Catherine Dunn totaled eight points for the seventh grade Chiefs, who shut out Driver in the opening period. Lucy Hemmelgarn followed with seven points.

Dunn scored seven points in the opening round as EJMS beat Yorktown 18-8.[[In-content Ad]]
