Spelling winners named (2/10/05)
Taking Note
The spelling bee winner from Redkey Elementary School was Kenny Burks. He is the son of Penny Taylor.
The alternate was Nick Steed. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Danny Steed.
East Jay Middle School spelling bee winner was Chelsea Burns. She is the daughter of Kimberly Markle.
The alternate at East Jay was Drew Houck, the son of Jack and Dora Houck.
COLLEGE GOAL SUNDAY
Muncie Southside High School, 1601 E. 26th St. will host College Goal Sunday 2005 on Feb. 13 at 2 p.m. in the school’s cafeteria.
College Goal Sunday is a statewide charitable event that provides free information and assistance to Indiana students applying for college financial aid.
Financial aid professionals from Indiana colleges and universities help students who qualify for undergraduate admission to a college or technical school in 2005 complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Please bring parents’ completed 2004 IRS 1040 tax returns, W-2 forms or other 2004 income and benefits information.

West Jay Community Center in Dunkirk will host a basket making class taught by local basket artist Connie Whetsel on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005 at 6:30 p.m.The cost of the class is $30.

CAREGIVING PROGRAM
The Hoosier Heartland Chapter of the American Red Cross will be offering a Family Caregiving program for those who are caring for a parent, spouse or friend in a home setting.
The first in a series of programs will be on Saturday, Feb. 19, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and the focus will be on Alzheimer’s disease.

PROJECT LINUS
The sixth Annual National Make A Blanket Day will be Saturday, Feb. 19 at Concordia Lutheran High School in Fort Wayne from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and at Country Creations Quilt Shop, 5342 North 400 West, Decatur from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Project Linus is a volunteer nonprofit organization.
Volunteers make handmade blankets and afghans for seriously ill children to provide them with a sense of security, warmth and comfort.

Anyone wishing to make blankets on their own may drop them off (36” x 36” minimum) at Edward’s Sewing Center, Fort Wayne; Country Creations, Decatur; or Awesome Hair, Quilts and More, Bluffton.
FREE TREES
Ten free Colorado blue spruce trees will be given to anyone who joins The National Arbor Day Foundation during the month of February.
The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting between March 1 and May 31 with enclosed planting instructions.
The trees are guaranteed or they will be replaced free of charge.
To become a member of the foundation and receive the free trees, send a $10 contribution to Ten Free Colarado Blue Spruce Trees, National Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Avenue, Nebraska City, NE 68410, by Feb. 28 or go on-line at arborday.org.
