Sports editor needs help
Line Drives
I need your help.
First order of business is the title of my column.
I am terrible at coming up with titles and names for things. It took me a good two weeks to decide on the title for my blog, “The Write Schanz.” And I deliberated for nearly three days on what to call myself when I signed up for Twitter. I ended up using the same name as my blog.
I imagine this trait will continue when it comes time for me to have, and therefore name, children.
But this column, “Chris’s line drive,” was thrown together at the last minute without giving it much thought.
However, there is somewhat of a back-story to it.
All throughout my baseball (and now softball) playing days, I was never a power hitter. It wasn’t until the first day of this season that I hit the first home run of my career. Two innings later, I hit a second.
It was an amazing feeling.
Despite not hitting for power, I hit for average — a pretty good average, too.
The majority of my hits were crisp, sharp line drives in between the third baseman and shortstop, or just above their leaping reach.
Therefore, “Chris’s line drive” as a column title came to fruition.
After my first column, however, I wasn’t too fond of its title and began to brainstorm new ideas, unfortunately to no avail.
I told you a little bit about myself in my column July 11, so now I’m soliciting your help for suggestions to name my column.
Maybe I will grow to like the one I have now, but for the short term I’d like your input as to possible changes. Please email all suggestions to [email protected].
The second order of business is I’m quickly learning my predecessor was quite the staple in Portland and Jay County.
Beloved he was, and he will be missed. But just like he suggested in his own column, he won’t be completely out of sight.
I understand I have big shoes to fill. To do an adequate job though — to successfully follow in Ray’s footsteps for years to come — again I need your help.
If there’s something you’d like to see me cover, do not hesitate to inform me.
I’m all ears. As the editorial said Monday, let us know what’s going on so we can cover events to the best of our ability.
I stated previously my goal is to cover as much local sports as I possibly can.
But on the same accord, I am only one person and cannot be in two places at once.
The easiest way for me to know about an event or get something in the paper is for you to make me aware.
All it takes is a quick email or phone call to get the information I need to provide the coverage you want.
Ray has done an outstanding job in his time as sports editor.
It’s time for me to usher in a new wave at The Commercial Review, by trying my hardest to go above and beyond the exceptional work Ray has done.
It all starts with you, the readers. I’m here to serve you.
My final order of business: Under my brother’s influence, I took up the sport of waterfowl hunting a few years ago.
At first I thought preparing for a fall hunting season in the summer months was absurd, but as I got more involved with the activity I have come to realize it is actually a year-round ordeal.
Going to the same location to hunt week in and week out is always fun because the hunting had been good to us. But since I find myself approximately six hours away from our spot, making it there on a regular basis is out of the question.
When I first broke the news to my family I was moving to Indiana, the first thing my brother said to me had nothing to do with my job.
“Find a place to hunt,” he said.
Time to do just that. I need a new hunting spot.[[In-content Ad]]
