Starfire boys dominate (09/04/2008)
Middle school cross country
OSSIAN - Evan Liechty, Brody Shane and Joel Hawbaker swept the top three positions Wednesday to lead the South Adams Middle School boys cross country team to victory at the Norwell Invitational.
The Starfires scored 23 points, easily finishing ahead of runner-up Carroll (58) at the nine-team event. East Jay was fourth with 123 points.
South Adams and East Jay finished back-to-back in the girls competition with the Starfires placing fourth with 98 points and the Chiefs fifth with 124. Carroll won with 59, Norwell (90) finished third ahead of South Adams and Riverview (133) was sixth behind East Jay.
Liechty set the pace for the impressive effort by the SAMS boys, winning the 3K race in 10-minutes, 53 seconds. Shane was the runner-up for the Starfires five seconds behind Liechty, and Hawbaker ran to a third-place finish in 11:25.
Andrew Steffen gave South Adams a fourth top-10 runner as he placed seventh in 11:50, and Brett Affolder capped the team score in 12th at 12:07.
Dylan Cope was the only runner in the top 10 for East Jay's boys as he took ninth in 12:01. Zane Shreve was 18th in 12:39 followed by Kyle Scott (32nd - 13:33), Austin Muhlenkamp (34th - 13:46) and Chaz Carroll (35th - 13:47).
Kristen Muselman matched Liecthy's effort by winning the girls race in 12:38. Loren Sparks was next for the Starfires in 11th at 13:51, and joining them were Allison Amstutz (20th - 14:22), Darian Eccles (23rd - 14:28) and Erika Miller (46th - 15:55).
Amber Huelskamp led the Chiefs in the girls race with a time of 13:22 for eighth place. Abigail Johnson took 12th in 13:56 followed by Alex Loy (27th - 14:32), Julie Valentine (27th - 15:13) and Patricia Hein (45th - 15:53).
Clayton Rhoades won the JV boys race for South Adams in 12:30. Jalen Ryder was the top runner for East Jay in third place at 13:04.
