Starfire boys earn to wins

South Adams roundup

PONETO — The South Adams High School boys cross country team picked up a pair of Allen County Athletic Conference victories Tuesday, defeating the Leo Lions 18-39 and the host Southern Wells Raiders 15-48.
The girls team beat Southern Wells 19-39, but lost 21-38 to Leo.
Eric Isch powered the Starfire boys with an easy victory in 17 minutes, 33 seconds. Evan Liechty was the runner-up in 18:06. Brody Shane placed fourth in 18:24, and Joel Hawbaker added a fifth-place finish in 18:25.
Two South Adams girls placed in the top five, with Jenna Smith taking third in 21:40. Sawyer Shane had a time of 21:50 for fourth place.
In middle school competition, the Starfire boys lost 21-38 to Leo while Southern Wells did not have enough runners for a full team. The girls lost 20-39 to the Raiders and 23-32 to the Lions.
Ryan Ford led the boys team with a fourth-place finish in 12:19.
Hannah Coates finished in 13:12 for fourth in the girls race.

Netters edge HN
HUNTINGTON — The boys tennis team picked up its second straight 3-2 win Tuesday, knocking off the Huntington North Vikings 3-2. The Starfires also defeated Bellmont Thursday.
A couple of three-set singles victories lifted SAHS with Scott Hoeppner rallying from a first-set loss at No. 2 to defeat Luke Hoffman 1-6, 6-3, 6-1. Alex Huber claimed the first set in a tiebreaker en route to a 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, 6-0 victory.
Reid Zurcher and Ian Frank won 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 at No. 2 doubles. Loss came from Mark Muselman 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and the team of Kegan Sprunger and Derek Schwartz 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.
The South Adams junior varsity team won 4-3, led by a pair of doubles victories by Jonathan Steffen and Landon Lehman. William Hicks and Dylan Hicks also turned in a doubles victory, and Brayden Myers picked up the Starfires’ lone singles win.

’Dogs top golfers
GENEVA — Abbie Fisher was the lone Starfire to finish in the 40s as the girls golf team lost 194-219 to the visiting New Haven Bulldogs.
Fisher had a birdie, a par and three bogeys in her round of 49 for South Adams at Golf Club of the Limberlost. Matraca Fritcha of New Haven was the medalist with a 46.
Kristen Lehman followed Fisher with a 53 for SAHS, and Kristal All shot 54. Adrienne Pursley capped the team score with a 63, and Sam Schwartz finished at 64.

Spikers lose
LEO — South Adams’ volleyball team dropped to 3-15 on the year Tuesday with a 25-13, 25-6, 25-16 loss to the Leo Lions.
Taylor Farlow finished with five digs and four kills in the defeat. Jennifer Miller and Alyssa Armenta each had five digs.
The junior varsity team got nine digs from Holly Taylor in a 25-14, 25-21 defeat. The Starfires’ C team lost 25-9, 25-19.[[In-content Ad]]
