Starfire boys roll to victory

BERNE — Running on their home course for the first time this season, the Starfire boys picked up their second victory of the week.
Following up on Tuesday’s win at the Bellmont Invitational, the South Adams High School boys cross country team took first place at Saturday’s Bi-County Conditioner. The squad turned in a time of 1 hour, 39 minutes, 54 seconds to finish more than three minutes ahead of runner-up Norwell in the field of Adams and Wells county schools.
The SAHS girls turned in a time of 2:05:45 for second place behind Norwell (2:00:46) in the six-team group.
Evan Liechty and Brody Shane combined to take the top spot in the boys competition, in which runners alternated to complete a six-mile course. They finished in 32 minutes flat with teammates Joel Hawbaker and Simon Sprunger second in 33:03.
The Starfire duo of Hannah Moore and Kristen Muselman finished first in the girls race in 38:51.

FR spikers lose
ANNA, Ohio — The Fort Recovery volleyball team fell 25-22, 25-19, 25-12 Saturday to the Anna Rockets in its opening match.
Ericka Lennartz paced the Indians in the loss with seven kills, five digs and three points. Kelsey Fiely, Amy Link and Kylie Kahlig followed with three kills apiece.
Kylie Kahlig also had eight blocks, Abby Backs came up with six digs and Kayla Kahlig and Emily Link each put up eight assists. Fiely and Kayla Kahlig shared the team high of five points.
Fort Recovery won the junior varsity match 25-20, 25-15 with Tori Lennartz contributing seven digs, five kills and three blocks.
The Tribe freshmen got eight assists and four points from Rachel Pugh in a 25-14, 25-17 loss Saturday to the host Memorial Roughriders.

SA netters take 2
MONROE — South Adams’ boys tennis team cruised to two more victories Saturday, 5-0 over the Fort Wayne North Side Redskins and 4-1 over the Fort Wayne South Side Archers in action at Adams Central.
Jonathan Steffen and J.D. Tarr turned in a dominant effort at No. 2 doubles against North Side, shutting out Tyler Ellingwood and Austin Parker 6-0, 6-0. Ian Frank and Derek Schwartz gave up just two games in their victory at No. 1 doubles.
No. 1 singles player Alex Huber turned in the big win against South Side, rolling past Antonio Gooden 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Frank and Schwartz won in straight sets, as did Mark Muselman at No. 3 singles.

Tribe football falls
UNION CITY, Ohio — The Fort Recovery junior varsity squad scored all of its points in the fourth quarter only to fall short in a 16-14 loss to the host Mississinawa Valley Blackhawks.
Ryan Muhlenkamp got the Indians on the board with a 10-yard touchdown run, but the ensuing two-point conversion attempt failed. Evan Schoen scored the other FRMS TD on a 30-yard pass from Wyatt Blockberger, and Dylan Whitacre ran in for the two-point conversion.

Nichols places third
MONTPELIER — Travis Nichols turned in the top finish among local drivers on a long evening of racing Saturday at Montpelier Motor Speedway.
Nichols, of Portland, was third in the Thunder Cars that was rescheduled from Aug. 13. Thanks to the pair of make-up events, the evening including six A Main races.
In the rescheduled Thunder Cars race Nichols trailed Jason Shrout and Tony Bowman. Brian Baldauf, Jeff Baldauf and Steve Mills, all of Portland, placed eighth, 10th and 12th respectively. Jeff Baldauf was also fifth in the rescheduled Super Streets race.
In Saturday’s scheduled events, Jeff Baldauf was fourth in Super Streets, Nichols placed fifth in Thunder Cars and Ryan Sutter of Fort Recovery was 10th in UMP Modifieds.[[In-content Ad]]
