Starfire girls finish as runners-up

DECATUR - Sawyer Shane and Kristen Muselman finished just one second apart Tuesday to lead the South Adams High School girls cross country team to a runner-up finish at the Bellmont sectional.

The Starfires scored 85 points to finish behind champion Homestead (30). The SAHS boys scored 106 points and were fourth behind Bellmont, Homestead and Norwell.

The top five teams advance to regional competition Saturday at Marion.

Shane set the pace for the Starfire girls with a fifth-place finish in 20 minutes, 39 seconds. Kristen Muselman was one second behind Shane in seventh place.

Evan Liechty placed 12th for the South Adams boys with a time of 17:19.

SA spikers win

BERNE - The South Adams volleyball team picked up its second victory of the year Tuesday, rolling over the visiting Union City Indians 25-23, 25-16, 25-16.

Amber Neuenschwander racked up 28 assists, nine digs and two kills for the Starfires. Karen Bollenbacher added 14 digs and 13 kills, and Kysha Cox had 11 digs.

South Adams dropped the junior varsity match, 14-25, 25-20, 15-10.

Eagles, Chiefs split

The East Jay and West Jay middle school football team split their games Tuesday at Jay County High School, with both ending in shutouts. The EJMS eighth graders rolled to a 28-0 victory while the Eagle seventh grade team dominated in a 36-0 win.

Jason Houston paced the East Jay eighth graders (7-1) with TD receptions of 17 and 57 yards. Preston Keen had 62 yards and two TDs on the ground. Keen, J.D. Mangus and Brentt Lewis each had six tackles.

Sean Winget led West Jay (4-4) with 46 yards rushing and eight tackles.

James Williams turned in an impressive effort for the Eagle seventh graders (3-3), scoring on runs of 53, 63 and 98 yards. He added an interception return for a touchdown, a pair of 2-point conversion runs and nine tackles.

Hunter Malott scored on a 1-yard run, and Mitch Bennett made eight tackles.[[In-content Ad]]
