Starfire girls stop 24-game skid

BERNE — A strong second half led the Starfires to their first victory in more than a year.
South Adams High School’s girls basketball team stopped a 24-game losing streak Thursday, defeating the visiting Muncie Burris Owls 56-39.
The Starfires, whose last win came in the 2010-11 season opener over Daleville, had a four-point advantage at the intermission and proceeded to outscore Burris 29-16 in the second half.
Dzejna Ahmetovic led three SAHS players in double figures with 16 points. She went 8-of-10 from the free-throw line and also grabbed nine rebounds.
Alaina Johnston had 12 points, 17 rebounds and seven steals, and Lyndsey Chandler added 10 points and four assists.
South Adams shut out the Owls in the fourth quarter of the junior varsity game for a 29-22 victory. Samantha Baker and Marissa Bisel led the Starfires with eight points apiece.

Wrestlers pin Railroaders
GARRETT — All eight of South Adams’ victories came by pin in a 54-14 triumph over the Garrett Railroaders.
Four of those pins came in the first period, with Jordan Landers (170) finishing off Bo Davis in 1 minute, 38 seconds. Todd Batt (138) needed just one second longer to defeat Noah Getts, L.J. Moser (120) topped Zach Helton in 1:44 and Nathan Bauman (285) beat Jake DenHartigh in 1:59.
The Starfires had a run of four straight pins from 152 through 182 with Nick Batt leading off the effort with a victory over August Novy in 5:31. Shea Pyle (160) pinned Gabe Gunion in 3:32 followed by the Landers win and then a victory from Isaac Werst (182) over Che Fuentes in 4:26.

Swimmers top Angola
BERNE — Kara DeLong and Cady Farlow each turned in two wins Thursday to lead the Starfire girls swim team to a 103-67 win over visiting Angola. The boys team also won, 79-77.
Cory Sank, Josh Dynes, Mitchel Kaverman and Jacob Werst teamed to win the meet-ending 400-yard freestyle relay in 3 minutes, 58.74 seconds to lift the South Adams boys to victory. Sank was also first in the 200 freestyle in 2:15.43 and the 500 freestyle in 6:07.86.
Kara DeLong led the one-two finish with Brandi Robinson in the 200 freestyle in 2:19.43 and was also first in the 100 backstroke in 1:05.15. Cady Farlow added victories in the 100 freestyle in 58.69 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:14.30.
Kaverman, Werst and Dynes each picked up one win for the boys while Michaela Rupp and Sylvia Marbach added one victory apiece for the girls.[[In-content Ad]]
