Starfire grapplers defeat EJMS (02/02/07)

Three victories for South Adams in the final four contested matches lifted the Starfires to a 51-42 victory Thursday over East Jay in middle school wrestling.

Isaac Werst (135) of the Starfires got the run going, pinning Cody Bellis in 4-minutes, 19 seconds. After a loss at 145 pounds, T.J. Burnfield (152) topped Justin Wygant in 3:21 and Cody Conner (160) pinned Micah Boyer in 3:38 to help push South Adams to the victory.

Other wins for the Starfires came from Todd Batt (80), Gabe Sprunger (100) and Josh Ehr (115).

East Jay's Nick Leonhard (110), Kyle Davidson (120) and Andre Duke (145) all finished their matches in less than one minute. Also picking up pins for the Chiefs were Chandler Stout (105), and D. J. Teeple (2:31).

FR eighth holds on

DELPHOS, Ohio - Fort Recovery's eighth grade girls basketball team turned in a big second quarter and held on for a 31-28 win Thursday over the St. John's Blue Jays. The seventh grade team suffered a 36-30 defeat.

The Indian eighth graders trailed 6-3 after the opening quarter, but racked up 15 points in the second to grab a seven-point lead. They were still up by five after the third quarter as they held on for the close victory.

Kendra Brunswick paced Fort Recovery with 10 points. Holly Brunswick added six.

The Tribe seventh grade team fell behind 13-4 after the opening quarter and couldn't get back in the game.

Olivia Schwieterman scored 12 points to lead the team, and Kelly Nietfeld followed with six.

Bruins top WJMS

DUNKIRK - West Jay Middle School's wrestling team picked up three victories Thursday, but they were not enough as the team fell 55-30 to the Blackford Bruins.

Chase Louck (90) finished off his match in a hurry, scoring a pin in just 12 seconds. Other victories came from Drake Meska (105) in 4-minutes, 21 seconds and Nathan Drumm (120) in 1:13.

Blue Jays defeat Fort

DELPHOS, Ohio - Fort Recovery's middle school boys basketball teams each slipped to 3-10 Thursday. The eighth graders fell 59-49 to the St. John's Blue Jays, and the seventh grade team lost 44-38.

St. John's scored 37 second-half points to pull away in the eighth grade game, which was tied at 22 at the intermission. The Blue Jays made 26-of-39 free throws, compared to 5-of-9 for Fort Recovery.

Shane Brunswick tossed in 18 points to power the Indians, and Craig Fortkamp and John Homan each added eight.

The Tribe seventh graders led 30-27 after three periods before struggling in the fourth. They gave up more points in that fourth quarter (17) than in the entire first half as St. John's rallied for the win.

Jared Kahlig had 16 points for Fort Recovery, and Jason Pottkotter also reached double figures with 13.

Chief girls stay perfect

The East Jay Middle School sixth grade girls basketball team kept its run of perfection rolling Thursday with a 24-17 win over the Delta Eagles.

Rachelle Jackson racked up team highs of nine points and six rebounds in the victory. Emily Devoe followed with five points to go along with team bests of three steals and three assists.

Gabie Cross also had three steals, and Hannah Ainsworth blocked four shots.

Hannah Fifer had two points and Allie Thayer grabbed five rebounds as the B team slipped to 0-4 with an 11-2 loss.[[In-content Ad]]
