Starfire netters beat Jay County

The South Adams High School girls tennis team defeated future Allen County Athletic Conference opponent Jay County on Friday, 4-1.
South Adams got all four of its wins over the Patriots in straight sets.
Brittany Potts beat Jessica Kerrigan 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Maddie Gerber defeated Jay County’s Morgan Kaufman 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, and at No. 3 singles Maddy Kloepper won 6-0, 6-2 against Kyra Braun.
The Starfires got their fourth win from Erika Miller and Kara Seffernick at No. 2 doubles, 6-1 6-3, over Michelle Wellman and McKayla Ronald.
In the only victory for the Patriots, Faith Parr and Emily Westgerdes defeated Kylea Pierce and Riley Leichty 6-4, 6-2. Westgerdes and Parr moved up to the top doubles position for the first time this season and are still undefeated on the year.

JC baseball one-hit by Woodlan
WOODBURN — Tanner Reynolds got the only hit of the game Friday for the Jay County baseball team in its 4-0 loss to the host Woodlan Warriors.
Woodlan scored one run in the first and added three more in the fifth, capitalizing on one Jay County error.
Jason Houston took the loss on the mound for the Patriots, striking out four and walking five.
Jay County falls to 4-7 on the season and will host Muncie Southside for a doubleheader at 11 a.m. today. Woodlan improved to 16-1.

Star golfers second
GENEVA — Cal Clouser and Derek Fox led the South Adams golf team with identical scores of 45, but it wasn’t enough as the Starfires placed second at Golf Club of the Limberlost.
Bellmont was first with 174. South Adams, which played host to the three-way meet, was second with 189, and Adams Central scored 225 for third.

Jacob Rife shot a 49, and Brad Green posted a 50 to round out the South Adams team score. Jared Grabau also competed for the Starfires, shooting a round of 73.

South Adams loses big
LEO — The South Adams softball team managed only three hits Thursday, and Leo put up double-digit runs in the second inning on the way defeating the Starfires 16-1 in five innings.
Leo scored two runs in the first inning and poured on 10 in the second to break the game open.
The Lions added three more in the third before the Starfires finally broke the shutout in the fourth inning. Leo plated one more run in the bottom half of the frame.
Alyssa Bluhm led South Adams with two doubles and scored a run on an RBI single by Alaina Johnston.
Katelin Augsburger took the loss for the Starfires, giving up 12 runs — seven earned — on nine hits in two innings.

Indians lose in five
FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery’s softball team suffered another loss Thursday in its search for the first win of the season.
Tori Vaughn had an RBI double, driving in Lauren Gehle as the only run for the Indians in their 14-1 loss to the Parkway Panthers.
Kasey Vogel and Chelsea Timmerman each added singles.
Timmerman took the loss in the circle, giving up 14 earned runs on 14 hits while walking three.
She also struck out a pair.[[In-content Ad]]
