WINCHESTER — The South Adams High School girls tennis team won its season opener 4-1 Wednesday over the Winchester Golden Falcons.
Aine O’Donnell cruised through her first match at No. 1 singles, defeated Robin Goodhew 6-1, 6-2.
Alex Fox added a straight set win 7-5, 6-3 over Mylie Winger for the Starifres at No. 2 singles, and the team of Abbie Campbell and Holly Taylor topped Delaney Miller and Christie Casperson 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.
In the No. 1 doubles match, Lindsey Graber and Kassy Potts bounced back from losing a first-set tiebreaker to defeat Heather Hersberger and Kristin Steveson 6-7, 6-3, 6-4.
At No. 3 singles, Mallory Eicher fell 6-4, 6-3 to Kylie Amarino.
South Adams dropped the junior varsity match 5-1 with the lone victory coming from Victoria Williams at No. 3 singles.
Waters wins opener
SALA BAGANZA, Italy — Jay County High School graduate Mitch Waters pitched the Sala Baganza Baseball Club to victory in the second game of its season-opening double-header Sunday.
Waters, JCHS class of 2002, opened his second season in Italy’s Serie A2 by striking out seven batters in seven innings in a 3-1 victory over Acotel Urbe Roma (Rome). He gave up one run on five hits and a walk.
He started the other game in right field, finished 1-for-2 with a walk in an 11-2 defeat.
During the 2010 season, Waters went 7-5 with a 1.91 ERA.[[In-content Ad]]
