Starfires crush Bluffton (04/18/08)

BLUFFTON - The Starfires left no doubt.

South Adams High School's baseball team finished off its hosts early Thursday night, scoring 12 times in the second inning of an 18-1, five-inning victory over the Bluffton Tigers.

Jacob Sonnentag smacked a home run in the win, and Jordan Steiner went 3-for-3 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs. Kyle DeArmond had a double, four runs and three RBIs, and Sonnentag went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.

Daniel Bollenbacher, Daniel Dynes and Chase Sprunger each added two hits, and Caleb Armenta scored twice.

Bollenbacher took advantage of the great run support, getting the win as he allowed two hits and a walk in two scoreless innings. He struck out two batters.

Ethan Sharp, Sprunger and DeArmond all pitched in relief.

'Cats smash FR softball

FORT RECOVERY - A 10-run second inning helped extend the Indians losing streak Thursday.

The Fort Recovery softball team dropped its sixth straight game, falling 12-2 to the visiting Minster Wildcats.

After Minster's big second inning, the Indians (2-7, 0-2 Midwest Athletic Conference) got their only run in the bottom of the fourth.

The Wildcats scored twice in the top of the seventh for the final margin.

Beth May took the loss as nine of the 10 runs against her in two innings were earned. She gave up four hits and three walks while striking out one.

Kinsey Wenning gave up two runs in five innings of relief.

Ashley Grube had an RBI single for the Indians, and Val Fortkamp singled and scored their lone run. Joanna Snyder finished with two hits, and Heather Schmackers had a double.

Starfire golfers fall

GENEVA - The South Adams golf team fell a bit short Thursday, losing 198-204 to the Woodlan Warriors at Wabash Valley Golf Club.

Landyn Waugh was the only Starfire golfer to break 50, finishing with a 47. A.J. Stites of Woodlan earned medalist honors with a 43.

Mark Farris followed Waugh with a 51 for SAHS, and Ryan Moser and Thurman Pursley each shot 53.

SA softball loses 1st

BLUFFTON - An eighth straight win to open the season was within sight. But the South Adams softball team couldn't keep the streak alive.

The Starfires gave up six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning Thursday night and lost for the first time this year, 7-4 to the Bluffton Tigers.

The defeat came in the Allen County Athletic Conference opener for SAHS, which had outscored its first seven opponents 73-18 with four shutout victories.

Amber Melick took the loss for the Starfires, who scored three times in the top of the third inning to take a 4-0 lead. Bluffton scored once in the bottom of the fourth before exploding in the fifth.

Braves top JC JV baseball

DECATUR - Jay County's junior varsity baseball team scored once in the final inning, but couldn't get the second run it needed in a 2-1 loss to the host Bellmont Braves.

Bellmont scored once in the first inning and once in the third, and then held on after Tyler Freyburgher crossed the plate to pull the Patriots (3-2) within a run in the final frame.

Ben Vance took the loss, giving up two runs - one earned - on five hits. He struck out three and did not walk a batter.

Vance also had two hits for Jay County. Mike Masters added a double, and John Pettus and Nathaniel Brown had one hit apiece.[[In-content Ad]]
